A couple weeks ago a friend from church dropped off a burl that he wanted sliced. So I built cookie sled 1.0 that I could clamp to the saw using the log clamps and went to work.

Another view

Slices - at 2 inches thick on the saw scale which left them at about 1-7/8 thick. The other half of the burl which is not shown here I sawed at 1 1/2 on the saw scale.

If this type of job comes up again I think I may build sawmill cookie sled 2.0. which will fasten to the rails using the log clamp mounting holes which will let me have a much wider table.

I did not saw anything on the mill today, but I did plane few boards that will become deli shelves in Tampa.  They wanted wide, blue pine.  We do not have any dry, wide, blue pine.  The customers settled for longleaf heart pine.  Some of the boards had a little blue stain but a couple were also curly.

For those of you who work with sappy woods, like heart pine, I tried a new (to me) concoction today to clean up the planer beds on my planers.  I mixed mineral spirits and Johnson's paste wax into a slurry, and it cleaned the sticky sap better than anything I've previously tried.  I had run this pine in the hotbox prior to planing at temps in excess of 160°, but they still made a mess of the machines.

Cavey,

I'm getting a craving for a nice Reuben sandwich from just looking at those boards. I am sure they will be a big hit with the customers and work great as a display.

Ok, so it took TWO days.  How much would that have cost you at the lumber yard?
What do you think the lead time would have been?

Yes!  The butt log from the Ponderosa tree.  I have the second log to do (slightly smaller diameter but 35' long).

I have a SkyTrak 9038 that could lift one end at a time.  Set it on some blocking and let it roll off, lift and repeat.  I have better blocking now (waste from this log) to make a better Jenga tower (see the whole story here) for the next log.  Yeah, by myself.  Always keep a machine between me and the log!
Quote from: WDH on July 07, 2022, 12:14:41 PMThose long beams would cost a small fortune.......

I got the two logs plus a short 17' and a very knotty 10' on one load.  Only had to pay the transport of $600.  So this first stack of beams was ~$300 plus my free labor.8)

I don't have any flat land to stack/store these so up on the deck is where I put them...

I also have a 48" x 16.5' cedar to mill up at some point.  Probably make a nice dining table and perhaps the counter tops for the cabin.  I'll see how tight the grain is and how durable it would be for that.

Nice work Tom.

I am back sawing for a customer that I have sawn for a couple of times this year.  Here is what he is building:

All of the logs came from his property.  I am presently sawing the last 20' X 12"X12" timber but I have no idea where it will be used.  I just saws um and leaves um.  ;D

I should finish this phase of sawing Monday or Tuesday.

You guys and your big stuff.  I milled 1x6x6 ERC today.  I had a guy ask for 1x6x6 and originally I told him I could only do 8' long, but i decided I could get some 6' logs from my property across the road.  I went over there with the mule to bring them out.  It got too hot by noon, so I quit for the day.  It will be much nicer tomorrow, so I will do 20 more for him.  I probably don't have the logs for enough short ones, so he will get some 8 footers to finish out the order.  He asked for a couple 2x3, which will be easy enough.

Big day @ the mill. LOL. Cut my friend some 5/4 decking from a small hemlock log. He is going to replace a few bad boards on his deck. Have you seen the price of this at the lumber company. WOW!

Big day @ the mill job two. Friend at work needed some pine planks to make an outdoor bar for his wife.
Had a nice aged log with some nice blue stain. Three 2 1/4X8X8. One odd width board.
No profit today both orders were free!

Finally after a long delay I got another log on the mill.  My third log to be exact.  The first log turned out good, and I learned a lot.  The second log was an complete disaster.  Now this Red Oak log turned out great.  Long story short the hand crank winch was too much work, and the pull start Kohler engine was a pain because if you turn the engine off  you have to get on a ladder to pull start the engine again... So I swapped in an electric winch, and got a battery on the mill.  What a upgrade.  Loading the log was super easy, and electric start on the engine is a breeze.  Now I have about two dozen Red Oak 2x4x8's.  Pretty wood, came out very clean and beautiful grain which I failed to highlight in the picture. The new Kasco blade I put on cut very nice.  Didn't hit any log dogs this time!

Also it was so nice to be sawing again.  Gained a lot of experience with this one.  First time cutting 2x4's and it's much easier to handle and stack afterwards vs the previous stuff I attempted.  Next time I will be ready with a cut list so I can speed up the process as I spent a good twenty minutes after getting it down to a cant before I figured out what I wanted out of it.  More prep and planning next log!

Actually future sawing. My wife got a call yesterday from the old school secretary from her teaching days. The lady is now a widow living alone and said this walnut tree had fallen against her house and wondered if I wanted it. We went over and while they visited I cut the tree into firewood, stacked the bigger limbs and cut about 20' of the butt into small logs I will go back and get later.

A brushpile near my truck

A stack of firewood scattered across her yard for her gardener to stack along with a bunch of small limbs and leaves and green walnuts from the tree. Once I got the top moved I could see damages included gutter issues and two metal handrails and the brickwork where the handrails were mounted into the brick steps. Fortunately no apparent structural damage or even any broken windows.

Nothing huge but I'll get a few boards, 8/4 LE slabs and maybe some 9/4 square stock for bench legs. I'll return with my 5X8 trailer, a cant hook and maybe a couple of small poles to parbuckle these onto my trailer while my wife visits some more. The wood is not worth the trip and the effort but helping a friend is.

Howard, I like the idea of Walnut bench legs out of smaller logs. Hope to try some soon.

You are a good man, Howard, even if a little bit educationally misdirected.  Tigers are not native to Alabama or North Florida, and Eagles hunt, not declare war.  But your catfishing prowess and appreciation for peanuts, hushpuppies, and grits cooked the proper way, give you a big advantage on being reformable.

I milled some very small post oak for a guy this morning.  I wouldn't cut it that small for myself, but he was happy with it.  Then it was time to take my tractor front tires off to take in and get new ones.  It's really nice to be able to pick up the front end with the loader.  I took the wheels off and then set the front end down on some blocks to keep the load off the loader all day.  I got the new tires back on about 5:30.  It will be nice to not have to air up the tires constantly.

Finished again.....again.

I'm ready to make the last turn and saw down to the final 12"X12"X20' on this job.

It started out as a 34" butt log and the side lumber made lotsa ¾" stuff.

I have no plans to saw anything for the rest of the week.  Too Dang HOT !!!  smiley_sun

I had to have a front flat repaired a week ago on similar sized Kabota.  It already had a tube in it so it was replaced.  The guy said next time tires will probably need to be replaced because of dry rot.  :(  I don't look forward to 2 new fronts.   Rears are same age.  :o

I also like having a front-end loader to avoid the use of a jack!

firefighter ontheside

Samand... I considered some fix a flat or slime and I could have made these tires go further, but they had pretty good dry rot and cracking on the side walls.  The rears are still in great shape.  I spent a bit over $400 with mounting for the 2 tires.

When I had one of the front tires off my Kubota and took it to get a patch, I asked the tire guy what they had for choices when it came time to replace. One option was to use skid steer tires, same size as the fronts, but more rigid with more plies.

As for sawing, I've been working on some construction projects lately, so my sawmill's been resting quietly.  zzzz_smiley
