Monday we will bring those heavy slabs back to the sawmill for re-sawing.  There was too much intense activity this morning to take the time to be concerned with slabs.   Our total focus was the timber.

I must say that I had 4 excellent tailgunners and also enough support equipment to get the job done.

This post deserves exposure in the "does the customer really help" thread.

I've done 30 foot resaws of old beams in a commercial yard for a good customer and  can still feel what this takes, even though its been a while.

MM,

Great job. Thanks for the photos and explanation.
(I moved my laptop and lost the rest of my post.  ^!_B$()!@)

I started this job 14 miles from home. Mostly WO and RO (and the customer can't tell them apart). One stray pine slipped it. The fog in the picture at 7:00a.m. did not last long and there is no shade and no breeze so were shut down at 2:00 p.m. instead of 3:00 (The customer had a family event to go to tonight so we knew it would be a short day). We were pretty wrung out and the early stop sure did not hurt my feelings!

Wide WO 4/4 boards and the end. A few 10' 4/4 oak under some 6X6 posts. One RO was pretty sweepy and the customer did not know if we could get a 6X6 and was very happy with it.

A 4.5' Pine cut to 5" LE benches for the wife. I am always happy to accommodate such requests where possible. If the wife is happy, the customer is happy and I am happy.

Mostly 4/4 boards on the stack with a row or two of pine 2X4s. Some were edged while most on the bottom were one side edged.

Here you can see the cabin logs and on-going cabin build down the hill from the sawing site. It is going to be a very big cabin on a tall ridge overlooking the Greenbrier River. If tomorrow is as bad, and it is predicted to be so, I may be beating a path to that river.

The customer is only available on weekends and there are more logs down the hill to be moved up to the landing. It is promising to be a real slow project working around weekends, weather and both our family schedules and commitments. Tomorrow will be another short day as they need to break camp and head home. With the hot weather that is no problem for me. We did not run a tally today but there were 4 hours on the engine.

As I write this we are having a toad strangler of a thunderstorm but it seems to be running its course.

Yes, they are the carpenters that will be hanging that timber and using the lumber that I am sawing.

I have had 3-4 tailgunners all of the way with this job.  For a while there was 6.  It's hard to take a picture without at least one person in it.  It's good but it won't last.

The log truck loads of logs are at the same location but for another customer.  Kinda confusing.  A logger bought the Cypress logs for the customer (home building contractor) that I am presently sawing for.  I am set up at his log truck yard.  It's the logger that is now bringing logs for me to saw.  He is emptying his log stash and has ERC, Red & Post Oak, Sweetgum, Walnut, Cherry, Cottonwood, Sycamore, and whatever else.  I didn't take a picture of it unloaded because my phone never would have talked to me again.   It's a mess.  ::)

Wowzers! That is an impressive beam cut Mr. Magicman, looking down the length the perspective almost reaches the horizon! :o
That dangle head grapple loader is definitely the right machine machine for that job.

Great job by a great sawyer! I assume you are enjoying the experience.  Seems your mobile sawing has become stationary, at least til the log yard guy runs out!

MM,
Man, that is a lot of work!  I'm stationary and soooo glad I built my track for up to 42'.  The 35s I just finished were a piece of cake compared to what you had to do!

Thanks Magicman for the pictures and explanations. That was quite a project. I am impressed.
How long did that take you and how did you charge them for that project? Hourly rate? Flat fee?

I went back to my site 14 miles away today to continue sawing there. It was so hot and we were so wrung out I clean forgot to take final pictures when we stopped sawing today. We had 5.5 hours on the mill and got off to a great start with fog and cooler weather. We had about 2300 bf for the 2 days. Lots of 4/4 oak, an assortment of 8/4 one side LE slabs, 6X6 posts and today I started sawing a lot of 3/4 stock. We were surprised by a couple of maple logs and even one small hickory sneaked in. They were very happy with both and earmarked the maple for future cabinets, the hickory for a table or such and set the slabwood aside for smoker wood.

When the sun broke through with no shade or breeze we only sawed a couple more hours then called it a day and penciled in Labor Day to continue. The wife was very worried yesterday due to a slow start and progress but things clicked today and she told me she was much happier and confident now. We tallied the lumber and they paid me with a $100 bonus.

I packed up, came home and unhooked the mill and removed the prefilter and washed it then knocked most of the sawdust out of the filter but when I went to put it back on and tightened the wing nut the stud broke flush with the mounting. It looks like only about 1/8" broke off - may 2-3 threads. Now to see how hard that is to get out and repair. It looks simple but ....

I am still sawing Cypress.  I counted thirteen 18' and a couple of 9' left to saw so we may finish tomorrow with the Cypress.

Cut some Hemlock and Pine 1X8 to finish the roof on the planer shed and start the siding. Purchased a new American (Maine) made bark spud. Works great.

cut a few ERC logs today.  sawdust Jimmy is making potting benches for the masses.  here is an 18 foot 4x4 I did for fun.

got to do some "uncutting" after my buddy Jims (we brew beer) son stuck his face next to their dog and got him riled up.  not vicious but too rambunctious.  sewed him up in the shop.  head lamp, readers, and a table saw for a table.

The Cypress job shown above is done.  There were 25 tree length logs from 36' to 60' with the butts as large as 32".  Most of it was bucked into 18' 4" logs.

The main objective was to produce as many 3¼" slabs as possible, so I leveled the top of each log and then dropped the blade 3¼" to produce as many uniform slabs as I could.  These will be debarked and used on the exterior and interior of a duck hunting lodge and chinked between to produce what would appear to be a log structure.

The wedge was removed from the remaining cant which was sawn 5/4 X as wide as possible.  I sawed hourly rate which is very unusual for me, but then I have never had a job like this.

The tailgunners will scale the lumber shown above tomorrow.

As a side note, the landowner (not the customer) brought in a log trailer load of logs for me to saw, but he will have to wait his turn as I am already committed to another customer after this Cypress job.

A variety of logs including Hickory, Black Locust, Cherry, Red Oak, Magnolia, Elm, and whatever else that I have not identified.

Plus this Walnut in the foreground and ERC in the background.  I'll move back to him when I finish my other commitments.  That plus some medical issues to attend to.   :-X

Lynn,

I'm sure glad you made that decision to slow down and cut back on your sawing. :D

Geez I hate to follow and epic MM post! Those are some slabs you are cutting aside, but I get it.
@richiway is that a Peavy mfg. co spud or a Garret Wade spud? Just curious. If/when I buy one, I'd like a longer handle. They just seem too short at under 2' or so.

Doc, how come you didn't show us the stich work? I am trying to learn here and the last time I did one of those the Doc doing the followup said I needed some pointers for the future. ;D (although he complimented my ability to avoid any infection.) Apparently I was lacking in 'style points'. Everybody is a critic. The way I looked at it: "nobody died". :D
