The dirt caked side of a log determines my initial cut.

Now I know that I not the only one that does that.

I'd say 6 Acres gets the genius award for today and GAB gets the Purty Smart award for agreeing on sawing the clean side of the log first. Maybe it should be in the Obvious thread but I confess I never thought of that aspect either.

After getting rained out yesterday I returned to the site 14 miles away. Dang near wiped out a nice 8 point about a mile from the site. He was just standing there at the end of a drive by the mailbox till I got right beside him then he jumped out in front of me and I had to slam on the brakes to keep from killing him.

I got to the site and saw the customers lights coming behind me. It was drizzling rain and awful weather to saw in with light rain scheduled all day and thunderstorms for the afternoon. I sawed one 6X6X12 WO post and a 1X6X12 board as side lumber off the log we had left on the mill. I like to leave a log on the mill at remote sites like that to annoy possible thieves. It was easier to put a blade on and saw it than remove the log.

Then we packed up and tallied in the drizzling rain (which did not do my laptop any good). I got paid and a nice tip. Looks like we did about 2975 bf in the2 days we sawed plus a few scrappy logs I sawed into stickers but did not bill the customer for them. We have tentatively scheduled for 2 weekends out to come finish the whack of logs. I probably spun for 50 yards on soupy clay till I finally hit gravel and got enough traction to come on out. I'd never have gotten the mill out without 4WD.

(My screen on my laptop would flicker but not light up and I tried a hair dryer and such but no luck. You could see the PC running but just could not read it. I went downstairs and got an old unused monitor and hooked too it and I got a small version of the screen I could read. After a few minutes I unplugged the monitor and seems to be working fine. Note to all: Do not walk around in even light rain with your laptop open! ::))

Maybe the mill makers will read this and go ahead and include a power washer unit in with the next mill they design. We might have to add a bigger lube tank if the run off the same one. :D

There is not too much to get excited about at da sandbox.

The first thing yesterday morning was to grub out a sawing site.

 Yup, grubbing away.

 Got er done.

 And then bring the packer.

The sawmilling site is ready for the sawmill setup.

So now I am ready for some logs.

I am sawing the usual 4X6, 4X8, 8X8, 6X12, and 12X12's.  I should finish the whack of logs shown in Reply#1222 above tomorrow and Thursday.

The logger has not delivered more logs so I don't know about next week yet. The cut list is a month long, but I need logs.

Not too much excitement here except Sand and Sweetgum.

Some of the Sweetgum is strikingly pretty.

Somebody said that if'en it won't roll it ain't a log.  Well this one wouldn't roll nor did it become lumber, it became a 12X12.

Most of the logs are 21', so the MS362 and a wire brush are busy bucking them to 10½'.

He has added thirty 16X16's to the cut list and the crew was dropping more trees when I left the job this afternoon.  The trees had better be yielding logs with a very minimum of 22" top end.  I reserved my hotel room for next week.  :-X

On a very personal note, I have made many trips to the "sand box" sawing for this customer.  Without exception "Ronnie" was always my helper, but Alas, not this time.

This picture clearly shows the kind of man and worker that Ronnie was and was taken April 10, 2019.  It is the latest picture of him that I can find.

Rest in Peace Ronnie.

cleaning up before and after the reunion, I decided some logs should just get milled and not just moved.  this one had sat long enough it was very dry and hard.  full of ants that were kind enough to make some potential epoxy areas.   ;)  It also was ugly with about 3 branches, that of course result in fantastic grain patterns.

should make some nice charcuterie boards.  live edge, interesting grain, and room for epoxy.

MM's site/set up makes me think of upgrades the mill makers need to add to the ultimate sawmill. It will have  a built in edger, a built in pressure washer, a cut off saw and probably a small fridge to keep your iced tea cold (It will have a drinking spout/straw to keep the sawdust out while in use) and the built-in ear muffs will pipe in your choice of music. It will automatically calculate the bf of the lumber as it is produced and show a feed out of the remaining lumber to be cut from the cut list fed into the machine at the start of the job. When a log is rolled on to the mill it will flash the species across the screen. It will be self leveling and have emergency shut off switches to prevent rolling a log across the bed due to unraised side supports, stop the head before the blade reaches the partially raised side support, clamp or claw, and will have alarms to remind you when the toeboard is still raised after the first cut. It will self stack and sticker the finished lumber as it is produced.

It probably won't sell because it would take all the excitement out of sawing. :D

also made a special sized pallet.  one of my standard lengths at 6 foot 2 inches. but only 24 inches deep.  I also do 9 foot 2 inches.  skids are spaced 18 inches.  usually 42 inches deep

this is cottonwood milled over a year ago, and on hand (air dried) for this purpose.  I did flatten two sides on the jointer, and then opposite sided on the table saw and planer.  nice and clean.  Kansas state tree.
should I roll some copper naphthenate on the bottom of the skids?  cottonwood does well, as long as no soil contact.

Just finished this job yesterday. 35,583 BF.   My mill was there for 5 weeks and 3 days but only sawed for 15 days and nearly all of those were just till lunch because of rain a and few other things. Fought mud on logs for half of that time because it was so muddy around there and customers  tractor was not big enough to pick up a lot of the logs so he was half rolling them. Each picture is of a different stack of lumber. Had a couple more pictures that I accidentally deleted. Thankful for the job and glad it's over. Have to go back later to saw up a bunch of oak for him.  He is building a house and a mother in law house he says. Keeping her on the property but at a distance. 😂. Mill at home now to do a couple jobs that people are bringing logs to me. Then back on the road.

Craig's question made me realize that there are many members that may not be familiar with this "sand box" job that I started Feb. 5, 2018. LINK  It's student condos at a major university.

 Here is the sign.

Here is a picture that I took this morning showing the construction about half completed.  There are twice this many units not pictured on the right.  This is the back side of the units.  Each unit takes four 12X12's, four 6X12's, eight 8X8's, eight 4X8's, and twenty four 4X6's.  The new units will be three story and will require four 16X16's per unit in addition to the above listed timbers.

This is to the left of the above picture showing dirt work being done, but it ain't clay dirt, it's 100% sand.  No rocks, just sand.

My sawmill is set up in the trees seen above which will all be removed as the construction progresses.  All of those trees will become timbers.  There are many Sweetgum trees in that flat in addition to the Oaks.  None of the timbers are exposed to the weather and all are stained/painted.  Some twisted but most have remained stable, so the builder is sawing and using what he has.

Yes Craig, I have sawed them all.  When I first showed up for sawing no condos were built.

This is some of the first ones that I sawed on my first trip.

Some random timber pictures, but it was difficult to get many pictures because the contractors were sometime getting them as fast as I was sawing.

 Some of the construction work.

 A few more timbers.

This was over 200 tree length logs that made four or five 11' logs.

4 slabs and another timber coming off.

No side lumber has been recovered from any logs.

Just whack um and stack um.

If I think about it tomorrow I will count the completed condo units.
