I see you widened your woodmizer to saw those nice wide slabs. Nice job
To be fair it was done before I started here and creates it's own set of problems with the extra pressure the weight and length causes but it's capable of milling around 50", anything bigger gets put on the 96" trucut you can see behind it.

Today I finished my first real sawing job since September 30th when I decided to take some R&R.

My customer barber chaired this Post Oak last evening after I left.  This is an 18' log and it ran back 16'.   :o

It had some nice rays but they were not on the cut list.

The cut list for that log was five 2¼"X7" and we got them.

Ah, still retired I see there MM.  :D :D :D  Funny your just like my cousin farmers.  Retired = driving a tractor for fun...in a field...planting something..

Magicman

Yup, still running blades through logs.

It was quite amusing to be sawing framing lumber for this customer while looking at over 21Mbf under a cover that I sawed for him in March/April.  ;D

I just finished a call from a previous customer that has ~75-80 SYP logs to be sawed into framing lumber that we scheduled to begin on the 12th. weather permitting.  Yup, busy.  ::)

This will be my last job for the year.

Also, please don't judge me on the sparse stickers. This is a customer's lumber, I'm stickering it to their specs🤷‍♂️

Magic, yesterday the high was about 10° and the wind was whipping. Not pleasant. Honestly, once all the equipment is warmed up between 10° and 20° is a nice temp for sawing IMO. I can hit higher feed speeds than at any other time. Plus everything stays frozen.

When the temp is either side of freezing, things thaw during the day and refreeze at night. You go to fire up in the morning and things are froze tight. So I just prefer it stay below freezing🤷‍♂️

All in what a guy is used to.

A buddy is bringing over an osage orange log this morning.  It's been down for several years.  I hope I can saw it.  I put a fresh 4deg blade on and plan to go slow.  I've never sawed it.  We are going to split the wood, because I want some.  Pictures later.

If the mill is struggling, just push it harder, if it burns all the way across the cut, tell people you used a laser.

firefighter ontheside

Well, that was an option, but it really did struggle to cut even very slowly.  It cut well though.  Nice and straight.  The yellow of this wood and sawdust is unimaginable.  My mill looks like a yellow bomb went off.
I kept 2 nice bookmatched slabs.  My buddy will try to get more logs.

Looks very nice and good to know it will cut straight if not particularly quick.

Got log deck full of pitch pine.Cut a couple logs 12'.Don't know why because I just wanted some 8' 2"x4"s and 2"x6"s for a future wood shed I am planning.Went ahead and cut a 12' cant and then cut 4' off of it.A lot easier to turn and lumber more manageable .Got several 4' 2"x4"s that I'll use for something. Not getting any faster but my lumber is looking a lot better mostly from what I've learned from you people

I would put a block/wedge, etc under that tail end to keep it from sagging down as you saw.

You may not shorten the next one so always remember to support long "overhangers" to prevent them from drooping as you saw.

MM:
If you look at the plaque on the end of his sawing shed your comments is exactly how he does it.
As he saws, the ends droop causing the center to rise and the closer you get to the bed rails the more apt you are to have thick and thin.
Sorry Percy, but you do not have a monopoly on "thick and thin".

When I first started sawing that sign was pretty accurate. Now I tell everyone that I can saw them thick lumber or thin lumber but hopefully on separate boards

Oh I had already noticed/seen that plaque.  8)

You did a good job of describing what happens when you allow overhangers no matter which sawmill you have.

@Vautour Not speaking for barbender but Eastern White Pine is the framing lumber of choice in my area, maybe because it is what we have. I like sawing it, and using it! It saws well, doesn't do funny things when drying, is strong enough and not too heavy or hard.

Not speaking for Barbender either, :D
The white pine I have tends to be knotty and brittle and not as good for framing (red pine is preferred for 2x's here). I do saw some 2x's, (usually the first log up from the stump), but the knotty logs are best for cutting 1" paneling.
