Way too much oil

Hey guys thanks for letting me join your forum. I have this old 024 stihl that I've had for years. It stopped working a few years ago and I couldn't figure out why (think I wanted a new one) but recently I've dug it out cleaned it up, got it working rather easily it turns out and since its last use it has developed a problem. When it runs and only then the amount of bar oil that is pumped out is crazy, it splatters every where. I have checked the whole oiling system and can't see anything seemingly wrong, no obvious damage. I can only possibly think that the pump is gone, its the old unadjustable plastic type but not 100% sure. The oil is coming from where it should just too much.

What do you think?

That is a tough one.  Usually if a pump goes bad, it puts out less than what it should.  Are you using bar oil that is thinner (less viscous) than normal?

If I were you, I would remove the bar and chain and run it to see how much oil is coming out of the slot.

It could be ok, BUT the old pumps will pump oil all the time the engine is running, which makes for a mess.
The newer types will only pump while the chain is running.

Depends on how you look at it .As I understand it the earlier 024's which I have uses a crankshaft driven oil pump and will pump any time the engine is running .If I'm correct the later models use a wire drive pump which only pumps when the clutch drum rotates .You can tell by looking at the clutch drum .If it has a notch in it it's a wire drive . I wouldn't get real excited if it throws a lot of oil but if it puts out too little I'd be concerned .

It doesn't matter that it drives all the time, when you are cutting it throws out so much oil that the inside gets totally filled with saw dust cake and you get covered with it aswell, oil I mean. I have ordered a new pick up and feed pipe maybe that will fix it, new pumps are expensive so waiting with that one.

I have seen kits that enable me to fit an adjustable pump on but not sure if it'll work as where the adjustment screw sits it appears like there is  bit of the crank case that won't let it. Anyone have any experience with this?

How fast does it drain the oil tank. Just so we can quantify how much oil it's putting out. Like if it runs out of oil and the fuel tank is still 3/4 full or 1/2 full.  I had a 385 that the metal line after the pump, but before the case channel was ruptured from rubbing.  That was an oil discharge mess, but it still was not prematurely draining out the bar oil tank.

The oil tank is empty just before the fuel.

I wonder if the crankcase gasket has slipped, normally underneath the exhaust - will create a leak, that doesn't leak when the saw isn't running.
