My dad bought this machine for me when it was new. Now, it doesn't run and feels like there's no compression. I'm suspecting it needs to be torn apart, inspected, and probably rebuilt.
Am I nuts to attempt this without small engine rebuild experience? I searched YouTube for a video tutorial without luck.
Are there tutorials available? Are parts going to cost more than the saw is worth? Any advice would be appreciated.

Id try to rebuild. Your Dad bought it for you and when you take on this job you,ll learn how saws work. Ive seen people on ytube do videos on this keep searching ytube.

My stepson never had someone to show him how to fix things. In his 40's he got sick of paying someone else to work on his vehicles. He has like 4 of them, with kids and his and hers.
youtube did it for him. He even replaced a motor by watching youtube.
If the saw means something to you, fix it. You can buy parts cheap and fix it yourself.
Must be something on youtube.

Rebuilding a 2 stroke is the simplest engine you can work on. In fact, when I took a small engines class in high school, our first project was to tear down and reassemble  2 stroke Lawn Boy mower engines.

I would defiantly get her running again, for sentimental reasons more than anything.

Let me just say it's a chainsaw not the space shuttle .There's plenty of information on you tube and others .Another option is finding a service manual on the model .Stihl makes some pretty informative manuals if you can find one .The add to that you can get advice on forums also .I personally have never had a problem with it and have resurrected more saws that were grave yard dead on arrival that most people would never even attempt to .-Old saying " can't doesn't grow in my garden "
