Jeff

I received a very special package in the mail today clear from Kyrgyzstan and Tom Sawyer. What made it special was much more then the old Soviet Union Chainsaw it contained. It was also the note and the C.D. that accompanied the saw.
-----------------------------------------------
Dear Jeff,

Here is your Soviet chainsaw.  I hope you can get it back together and working again.  It ran pretty well before I took it apart.  The CD has a bunch of pictures that I took as I was taking it apart.  There is also a short video of me starting it.

You also need to know that this did not cost me anything.  Another FF member wanted to give you a gift to thank you for all the work you do keeping the forum working.  This person paid for the saw and the shipping.  All I did was pack it up and ship it off.  This person also made it clear to me that they wanted to remain anonymous, so I can't tell you who it was.

I hope you enjoy it and that it makes a nice addition to your collection.  I wish I could be at the pig roast to watch you show off, but that will have to wait for another year.

Tom
---------------------------------------------------

Tom, Thank you for taking the time out to do this, and a big thank you to who ever it is out there that put him up to it. You can't know how much I appreciate it.  The Video Tom sent along that he made just for me, showing me how to start the saw was great, and all the photos he took as he disassembled the saw. There is one in there that I especially like of the saw and Tom's little assistant photographer. I wrote Tom a note just after viewing the C.D. to tell him I could not wipe the smile from my face, In fact even later in the day, I think the neighbor thought I was goofy as I was smiling while carrying brush into the woods.

here are a few photos of the pckage as it arrived, the parts, and then the assembled saw. :)

THANKS AGAIN TOM AND WHO EVER YOU ARE! :)

I think the box held up pretty well considering where all it had been. It did probably have a rounder look then when it first started.

A Box full!

I decided to degrease everything with my Rust Reaper degreaser before assembling. (It was already pretty clean!)

The Assembled saw. Aint she a beaut? ;D

That is a pretty cool looking thing - I wonder how it does on kickback?!

Now what you got to do it set it up and then when you hire a new guy down at the mill, ask him if he knows how to run a chainsaw - when he says yes - send him to that one and watch his expression.  :D

I am thinking he won't be able to figure out how to use it!

So, how did I end up here anyway?

sprucebunny

Hey ..... That's neat ;D

Looks like you got a couple leftover parts on the ground there ???

Notice the lever to the right by the carb diaphram (also the primer pump in the center of the diaphram, unusual).

You can turn the sawhead to the horizontal simply by releasing the lever, swiveling the bar, and returning the lever to position.

Cool   :)

Bet you are the only person in the neighbourhood that has one of those  :D

I notice a couple of interesting features on the saw, how the bar is drilled to reduce weight, like in an aircraft or racecar. And is that a removable starter there? again would cut the saw weight down. Would be a dang nuisance if you dropped it in the bush though  :( :D

What a neat gift and thanks to the anonymous donor, things like that really show how much we all appreciate Jeff's work here.

Cheers

Yes, the rewind only attaches long enough to start the engine. Actually, the saw doesnt seem that heavy.  Tammy is on the scales right now. Hold on.... ;D

The saw weighs in at 25 lbs dry without the rewind. :D

DanG it! Now I DO have to drive all the way up there to see that thing! ;D

Is there anything on it that might tell how old it is?

Jeff

There is a casting number that says 1985 but I think its simply a casting number and not a date. Dunno.

Tom Sawyer

I have to say that I haven't had this much fun since I was a boy at Christmas time.  I only wish that I could have been there to see Jeff's face when he opened the box.  I have only been a member here for a couple of months.  This really shows what a great place the FF is and the great people here.

Jeff, the 1985 stamped on the saw might be the date of manufacture, but I think it is more likely the date when the original mold was made.  The saw is probably newer than that.  Actually the saw could be one that was put together with parts from several saws (hence the color differences).  There might even be a price stamped on it somewhere.  The Soviets often did that when they made things so that the price was the same no matter where in the Soviet Union you got it from.

I have no idea of the mix ratio that they use here, but likely it is something like 100 grams of vodka to one saw operator per hour. ::) ::)

Rockn H

I just have to say the whole thing is pretty cool.  The saw, the thought behind it , everything.  Congrats on the saw Jeff. 8)

Bibbyman

Where can I get a saw like that?  I can't hardly bend over and run the one I got.

Dad talks about some of the saws they had back when he was a young man and tells of one much like this one.  It was built with a bladed that rotated because the engine couldn't be turned on it's side.

Actually I was just looking closer at the pics in your gallery Jeff.  The writing on the gearbox says "Friendship - 4A", "Price 300 Rubles".  That price is probably for the entire saw, although it could be just the gearbox.  I have no idea what that would have been in dollars when the saw was made though.

The numbers on the bar suggest that the bar was made in July 1985, but again I can't say that for certain.  The Russian word for "year" begins with the letter that is behind the 85.

Any other writing anywhere on the saw?  I didn't look very closely at it before I packed it up.

By the way, my little helper in the picture when I was taking the saw apart is my daughter Sarah.  She was very helpful, always taking my screwdriver away just when I needed it ::).
