Here is an interesting grain pattern I found in a Western Hemlock I was cutting. The log is a bit punky but had some interesting spots in it. Any one of you tree whisperers know what it means? I'm the curious sort. CG

I see circular saw-tooth marks, but not seeing unusual grain pattern. Or do you refer to the lighter (white) streak associated with the insect boring hole?

It may be that my sole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others

All the white streaks in your first photo appear to be associated with knots.   This would seem to indicate early stage "white rot" fungi.

Ya sorry I meant pattern across the grain, not grain pattern. I noticed the black spots associated with the light streaks of wood but couldn't tell if it was insect damage or something else.
Ben Cut, I am not familiar with white rot, I'll have to do some research on it.

 Thanks for the input.
