Why now use the saws vs. have them sit on a shelf to help the farm? Takes wear and tear off the "expensive" logging operation saws....and gives a reason to both build and run the oldie but Goldie's . They weren't made to be like a stamp collection :)

Yup,, make em earn their keep. And they are really a better choice for busting those tops down to firewood vs  the bigger saws with 28 inch bars.

Lot of us have similar saws that never get that tap on the shoulder from the coach to get in the game. But those saws and the bars and chains on them are capable of getting a lot of work done. Often, when I do pull something out that's overdue for some play time, I find myself asking why I dont run it more often. Too many saws, too easy to keep grabbing the favorites, too lazy maybe? But I have been making a point of grabbing different saws this year. Recent one was a nice 55 gray top that I really enjoyed working with.  How bout we add some variety this year?

Which is another good point. At my age it is getting a little harder to pick up the bigger saws and put them to work. BUT, on the other hand, it is great to have a stable of saws in good repair all ready to go when you need them. Most of us have been there when a hurricane or snowstorm comes in and wreaks havoc on our homes and property. That's when that stable of saws can really earn it's keep.

The last thing you want to be doing when there is a tree through your roof is start trying to get saws running.

Was watching Walt work away with that 154SE and was thinking that one saw was all that he needed.  But then thought about how much more fun Walt was having bouncing back and forth and comparing the performance differences.  I have my hands full of 1xx series saws. and I like every one of them.  And I should say I had none of those prior to joining this forum and lead down the orange path.

True for that task :) The endless discussion. It wouldn't be my pick for felling 28-32 inch at the base hard maple which is a task that dominates my saw time fall & winter :) And I'm moving along the small mount to retirement or gone and moving towards large mount saws. 562 for general farm & cleanup  work with a 24 light bar is a good setup. And for felling something 70cc or larger with a 28. SO if I had to have just one saw it would be a 572 derivative with 24 light bar for general work and the setup I now have with a X-tough 28 for everything related to logging.

Contemplating life with just 1 saw is like contemplating life with just 1 pair of underwear. An exercise in the unlikely. Very unlikely. :wink_2: A genuinely useful aspect of collecting all the saws we've accumulated is always having the perfect saw for any job you can imagine running into. With no compromises for power, weight, bar length, or even what saw you feel like listening to on any given day. Why even consider diluting those options?

What we have talked about, at some length when we are being honest with ourselves about getting older, is thinning out the OTHER end of the saw spectrum. Big heavy saws like Husky 2100's with no decos and such, have already been given new homes. There are days when we just don't have as much gas in the tank as others. (Our tanks, not the saws). I've noticed it with both of us. It's real, and becoming more frequent, as is the nature of things. On those days breaking down tops with that all metal 285 and 28" bar might not be the best choice. Denial doesn't help, but a smaller, lighter saw will. It'll keep you working longer and more comfortably.

I wouldn't be in a hurry to get rid of your smaller saws if I were you. They are going to become more, not less useful in the years to come.

It's hard work growing old, but we can still have fun.  It sure seems like Walt is having a ton of fun.  But he sure was moving faster with that small mount 154SE.
