How come some threads are too wide for my screen? Am I doing something wrong again? Some threads are way wider than my screen, and to read them,I have to scroll the page from side to side, ofte confusing for someone of my limited computer skills

Does your web browser have the favorites listed alongside the web page your looking at ? If it does use the X  to the right of Favorites above the add function to close the verticle toolbar. You can reopen it by clicking on favorites on the top horizontal tool bar. Hope this answers your ?.

Also, some thrreads may contain very log URL's, web addresses that people post, that can cause the screen to be to wide.

Per Furby's previous explanation, that is the "hyperlink" button, third from the left above.  I just found it as I have looked for it in the past, but didn't associate 'hyperlink' with 'URL'.  Not computer literate so much here.

I used to have that aggravating problem as dail_h describes, but don't anymore. Maybe because I have a different monitor and have the screen size set to 1280 x 1024.  But I have recently posted some pretty long URL's and may be the guilty party. I will make use of the 'hyperlink' button from now on.  :)

After reading further in the "How to Link" thread, I see da Boss also reminded us that there is a Help button up top, that tells us all about posting. Someday I'm gonna read that  ::)

WOW, it worked for me.  I am going to rest now :D ;D

The reason a long URL stretches the screen, is because your browser interprets it as one very long word.  You will notice that browsers dont have the facility to split words to another line. If they did, it would make for some interesting reading I would imagine.

I have the facility with in the forum to break words of excessive length, but I dont use it. Reason being, if i did, those long URL's would not work.  Generally, Tom and Chet and I fix them as we find them, but, if its something that doesnt happen to effect our display, we usually dont notice, even though they may be effecting yours.

Another source of page stretching occurs when people try to get cute and use long strings of characters like *************** or _____________ if you run that line far enough, it will stretch the page. Same reasons as given above.  You may notice now that this page is stretched out.

If it was someone else doing this to stretch the format on purpose, and I have had it happen, I fix it once and give a warning. Second time I simply throw on a posting ban. :)

O.K., the page aint stretched out. That irritates me so bad too that I had to even fix the example. :D

I switch back and forth between a larger screen and a small one.
Kinda a pain as I'm getting use to the larger one, but I deal with the smaller one as needed because it's what I have to work with. ::)

I have my Office Toolbar on the right hand verticle and use an 800 x 600 screen. Usually I'm fine unless I come across those long URL. I sometimes use the underscore character for simple tables, but I don't think they stretch the screen to far to cause scrolling. I haven't had a big table yet, so I haven't used the table function of the forum yet. If I'm guilty of exceding the screen width, just give me my ten lashings. ;D

I was a 'guilty' one, come to find out, for sure.  I looked back and found where the admins had to correct at least one of mine.   :-[

At the time, I recall it being long (an e-Bay link) but could see it wrapped nicely in the post, and as well looked okay in the 'preview' of the post. So I thought we be okay. Don't recall looking at it in the 'real' live "last 50 threads" so didn't see the problem it caused. I'll take those 10 lashes from Pigman, and hope someone points it out to me if 'ever' again.  ;)
