Smokey Bear Has New Message, Website

For decades, the USDA Forest Service mascot Smokey Bear has repeatedly told Americans "Only You Can Prevent Forest Fires".

This past August he has changed his tune to "Only You Can Prevent Wildfires" to help spread the word about the danger posed by fire along the wildland-urban interface.

This was done after research revealed that adults didn't believe they would ever start a wildfire. It was also found that adults envisioned forest fires as something that happened miles away from populated areas.

In addition to refining his message, Smokey has also decided to ditch his shovel in favor of a website, www.Smokeybear.com (it has been added to the Forum Links.)

Smokey is cool. I hate to see him give up his shovel though.  It is as much a part of him as his hat. :-X

Jeff

Here is my Smokey. I found him on a shelf in a flower pot in some shop. They threw him in with the 3 dollar flower pot. The flower pot went in a yard sale for 2.50. ;D So he's my 50 cent Smokey.
I can't beleive he still had is trowsers and shovel, both which are removable.

I went to the Smoky Bear.com site a few days ago and  printed off about 20 pages for coloring books.  I have 25 "rug rats" (1st & 2nd graders) coming at the end of the month to visit the Tree Farm and mill.  I thought it would be great to reintroduce Smoky to a new generation.  I have a 4' chainsaw carving of Smoky with hat, shovel blue jeans belt and a tin hat, standing beside a small tree.  He is cut from a Western Red Cedar.  All of the little people will be able to have their picture taken with him.   It will be a different experience for everyone, I am sure.  I have even planned for them to watch a tree get felled.  This part, I hope, does not create any discourging thoughts or comments about cutting trees.

Thanks, Jeff.   The trouble I would have with the list is that I would probably have to explain what most of them are or how they work. :'( :'(
