NZ Fieldays 06

Just got back from a visit to the NZ National Fieldays, all sorts of farming related stuff, and a good chance to look at sawmills  ;D

A 'few' pictures  ;)

Peterson had this new little baby mill on show... very cute.



Close up of the business end, electric motor (240 volt - 12amp) and a 4" cut (8" with double cut)



Notice how the blade swivels to any angle, not just 90 deg. Jake experiments with some fancy star shaped posts.



Then down to the Lucas stand, they had some real logs this time.  8)



Lil checks out a slab of kauri pine, that would make one sweet table 



Hows the grain in this slab?



This is a standard size slabber and a rimu log, thats one nice lump of wood, completely clear 4' wide boards

And there was also this strange machine there too  ;) :D Some of you may recognise it.



So basically a good days was had by all  ;D

Some detail and history on the logs at the LUCAS site at Mystery creek.
The rimu is 5ft wide and 9ft long and weighs 4.9 ton. The log was lifted out by chopper not long before the fieldays.
The kauri has some history that is interesting to the wood buffs.
Weight 40,000 lbs.
Diamensions 10ft long x 8ft wide x 12ft high.
The tree is 2000 years old and fell over 3000 years ago.
The section we are cutting is the root mass and a small section of the trunk. The timber is highly figured and very nice. 
The logs on site were supplied by arnold from Woodworks .

what kind of money would the nice slabs make, both of the saw and dried?

I was too scared to ask the price 
But I suspect that the slabs from each of those logs would have paid for the slabber that was cutting them ;)
Arnold would have a better idea on the $$

The slabs were priced at $1200 for the one the lady is standing beside, the one down on the skid was sold for $1100. A few of the larger ones were  sold for $1400. They were cut to 4 1/2 in thick.
The slaber is a new release from the LUCAS factory and has a max. cut of 9.5 ft. Great machine, It went like a dream and the accuracy was amazing.

that don't sound like to much money for a slab like that, esp one that is 41/2 thick
is the slabber mounted on a normal frame with a normal engine?

I have been looking on the Peterson website and don't see any sign of that new "baby" swinger.  Thanks for the pictures and information.  Do you have more pictures?  Just hoping.

      The engine, end frame posts and rails are standard slabber components.
The bottom and top pipes are xtra wide, the trolley frame is a wide and the bar is purpose built for LUCAS.

Hi Jim

Those were the best pics I got, there was a pretty big crowd and they were giving lots of Demo's there so I didn't get to poke around too much  I think all the Peterson crew were there and it was the first actualy unveiling, I imagine they will be updating the web site soon enough.

Um...yeah...well....the update post was SUPPOSED to be today, but since all my staff did so absolutely wonderfully at the Fieldays this year (with the Skillmill release), I decided they needed thanking in a better way. So I took them all out to lunch today instead. So sorry about the answermachine messages all afternoon. I promise an update on the Skillmill early next week. Thats IF Jake gets a break from the hoards at the door for them!!

Hi again - sorry, I had to take a week off I "ate" so much at that staff lunch....burp....beg pardon.

And working out how to post photos has been quite a journey. My digital SLR takes photos of around 8MB each, so getting them down to 30kb was my first dilemma....grrr...Jake, help. I can run sawmills, but computers get me....right, I think I've done it....I HAVE AN ALBUM OF MY OWN - yee haa!!!

OK, this is my first decent photo post. If this works, I'll start a new thread with a great story.

This lovely lady is 72 year old Thelma Vowles, who tried out the new Skillmill at Mystery Creek this year. She was amazed how easy it was, and felt quite the accomplished miller after cutting a board!
