THought you guys might like seeing a photo.  Here is a pic of one of many loads from the local dump.  Man i've paid about .60 a bd ft for logs that were worse than these.  Some oak, ash and maple, and oh yeah, that one big cotton wood that was so nice and straight i couldn't just leave it there.

Some folks might think thats enough wood to be busy for a 1/2 day, but us little guys will stay busy for awhile with this stuff alone.  I've been quarter sawing everything these days.  Ash, maple, oak, elm.  You name it.  More stable, and i'm sick of seeing flat sawn wood everywhere.  Of course i'm only careful QS when i saw the big nice oaks, i kinda bastard saw the other stuff.
Now if i can only get my blades to stay sharp long enough to cut a few of these suckers!

Kelvin, how are  you getting them onto the truck at the dump?

Now that's a sweet find  :)  I should really talk to someone at the borough to see if they have any logs at their dump.

Kelvin, you probably get a lot of ash in your neck of the woods. I wish I could find a dumb around here that had free logs.

Riles, look at the front of Kelvins truck and you will see a knuckle boom crane.

Its amazing what people throw out.  I asked my cousin, if you had to work 3 hours to pick up a stack of 5 $100 bills would you?  Thats what i've paid for this type of wood in the past, and we should make 3x's that out of it.  I'm glad nobody cares about this stuff right now, but i bet in a few more years if money gets tighter people will really be burning wood for heat and i'll be telling stories to my kids saying "IN the old days you could get a truck of nice logs at the dump!"
We'll see.
The truck actually has a simple 13' long Stetco crane behind the cab.  It has a hydraulic winch in it that will pull about 2,000 lbs but the brake will only hold 1,500.  The thing i do is hook a chain on the crane end and use it like a big fishing pole, yank it up, cinch up the chain until its in the bed.  Getting pretty good at it, but a real grapple loader sure would be something.  LIke to find something used for my big trailer some day.  The winch is nice though cause you can pull something in from a long ways off and keep taking off chains as you pull it in.  Wouldn't want to be with out that!
See ya,
