My friend and I are going to put a set of log stairs in his cabin. The plan is to run full logs from floor to floor then scribe 1/2 logs for the steps. Any ideas for the size of the logs for horses and steps? Thanks

If you are going to build to code, than the rise and run need to be whatever your local code is.  check your code book.. If you are not building to code,, hehe well code is not too bad to follow for comfortable foot width,,and rise,,, so check your code,, your area may be different than mine.

If none of the above,,than have at it!!  bigger looks better,,  ;D

evening Woody I agree with Anvil, bigger is better. Build them to code, they feel better when you use them. This is my first and only attempt at stairs. I had a friend calculate the rise and run for me. i would think that scribing the treads onto a full log stringer would be difficult. Will look sharp though.

Just dont varnish them. I have a friend with cherry half log steps. With a thick coating of varnish.  They are slicker than snot . Many of us have taken the fast way down. Dang sure not a set to use in your socks.  But when you walk up to a 4,000 sq foot cedar log home ya feel like ya should remove your shoes.

One code thing that relates to log size, the gap between risers, actually any holes in the stair area, needs to be less than 4".
