My Mother was cleaning out some old stuff and found this framed picture which she had got from my grandmother, and gave it to me.

On the back it says "Uncle Willy,  Uncle Perc?" who where my grandmothers older brothers. On the front it just has the photographers name and "New Plymouth, NZ" so it was taken locally.  As near as we can work out it would have been 1900-1910 era.

It shows them working on a big rimu tree, with a bit of bush scaffolding. Must have been hard work as they have taken their jackets off  :D

But cool to find an old photo like that, with a family connection and all.

Looks like they had some big vines to deal with?

That's neat. I like looking at old pictures. Do you see the "face" in the closeup?  ;)

The vines are actually another big forest tree called rata. It starts off as an epiphyte way up in the rimu trees and runs vines down the trunk to the ground. Eventually the rimu dies of old age, rots away and leaves a hollow multi-trunked rata tree in it's place.

This is what it ends up like, you can often climb inside the rata trees trunks.
