I'vr been hoping to find an alternative senior association.  Refuse to join AARP as they get in the way of any meaningful reform in congress.   Would like to have had my own account instead of Social inSecurity.   Jim

I remember back when there was talk of allowing workers to contribute a portion of their social security tax into a private account. I was all for it, then the AARP used a scare tactic telling members they would be "cut off" from receiving S.S. checks. I've snubbed my nose up at that organization since. They obviously lied and mislead their members. Organizations like that thrive on those who could'nt be self-reliant. They were trying to secure their status at the cost of future generations. Phooey to them!!!! >:(

I feel no urge to join any group like that.  The only thing it does for you that I can see is the little discount cards and I get almost the same thing through my Farm Bureau membership, which I get along with my car insurance anyway.  It is just another way for somebody to get your money.

Not particularly sold on AARP but I just went to the web site for American Seniors Asso. and believe me, the home screen turned me off bigtime when I spotted the Humana link.  I won't go into details, but I've had a bad experience along with many many others who signed up with them when Part D first started.

olyman

humana aint good. our druggist refuses to deal with them because of past experience. and if some of you dont know, the aarp is against you owning any sort of firearms. that did it for me..

Larry

Hey guys don't blame Humana...there just sucking up the dollars as authorized by CONGRESS when we got stuck with part "D".  Actually they are better than most.

That's why it is so desperately important that you follow health care reform...and write your representative as to your wish.  One of the issues is part "D" needs drastic change with Medicare going to competitive bidding for drugs...they already have a mentor if they choose to follow...the VA.

As to the original question I don't want no part of them old folks organisations...until I get old. ;D

I just seen a headline that said the AARP lost 60,000+ over pro-Obama health care stance.

I guess I'm not alone... ::)

I've watched several OLD peoples  :D organizations and are not sold on any of them. Seems like their all for the people until they get so big and all of a sudden they forget who they was helping to start with. All seem to have some kind of ties to a insurance company somewhere, that automatically turns me off. Just can't trust the insurance leeches.

Lots of folks have thought of the AARP as a benevolent old folks organizatin when actually they are a business making money off of older folks. Insurance is one of their mainstays.  Motel discounts is just a come-on.

I wouldn't trust them to be honest about my welfare if my life depended on it.

If you dig deep enough, AARP is also anti- gun rights.  ::) ::) ::)

Second, it is violently opposed; and

Tom summed up my thoughts of AARP quite well.

But as a business, they seem to do quite well on the old-folks routine.

Last summer I asked Mary to check out the American Seniors Association and think strongly about dropping AARP.  She was non-committal to dropping AARP – thinking the discounts were worth the money.

But I noted about a week ago an e-mail from AARP that they regretted that we had decided to cancel our AARP membership over the Health Care issue.  She never told me she was canceling us out but I'm glad she did.

I now see headlines where AARP is going to endorse the Health Care Reform bill.

I don't think she's made any move to join the American Seniors Association or any other.

Add me to the list,  er drop me off the membership list, AARP has become just another socialist insurance agency, doesn't represent my needs..

The AARP has never been anything but a profit center operating under the auspices of being a lobbyist organization for the elderly.  They have done a good job of shading their intentions, but time and politics is beginning to shine a light on them.

That's not to say that one can't find some value to belonging to the club, but it behooves all of us to know what we are buying and what/who represents us.

Was in AARP for one year. Thought it would help on the better rate at motels on a trip out West. Turns out, when I mentioned AARP, the response was ok (didn't ask for a card) or we give that rate to seniors anyway. Now, if I ask if there is a better rate with AARP, they just give that rate without asking for "THE" card.

I agree with Tom's summary completely. It has been an organization in disguise.

I only wish I was still a member so I could make a point of quitting.  ;D ;D

No one is more anti AARP than me. BUT, my daughter is in the health insurance business and the wife and I were turning 65 this year and I asked her to do a comparison to other Plan B Medicare policies including the drug plan. AARP had the only drug plan that carried the scrips that I now take. The others she checked on wouldn't cover those drugs at all. So we took the AARP plan. If we could find any other insurance companies that would take our scrips, then we would change in a NY minute.

I'm just asking because I don't know...

Does the American Seniors Association have the same or comparable insurance available?

Mary got her health insurance through AARP but it turned out, all they did was sent out her contact information to area insurance agents who contacted her.   She's dropped AARP so we'll see if the she's canceled out of the insurance program or has to pay a higher rate.   I'm betting not.

Kinda reminds me of the CAA or AAA in US. Their car and house insurance rates were higher than if I never had a membership at all. They said they couldn't compete in the Maritime markets and we pay more here than in Ontario. Someone explain that one, while we have a lot less highway congestion. It's kinda like buyng a car, the further away from Toronto the higher the price even if imported and assembled close to home.  Everything is FOD from Toronto. ::)
