grandson's first bear

Here's my Grandson with his first bear.He is 11 years old.





He shot the sow in Lagrange,Maine,weights 140 pounds.We are in a heat wave here,temps in the 90's,50 pounds of ice kept the bear cool for the ride home. Going to have a rug done or some sort of mount.

I wish your Grandson had been at my place last week, when I was in the cabin the rifle was in the RV and the bear was in between. I had to shoo him away so I could get to the RV. As soon as I was armed and dangerous I began to flit from tree to tree but the bemused bruin had already ambled into the swamp. He was too far in to drag out and he would raise a stink, attracting more bears, if I left him there so I let him go.

To show his gratitude he came back later and bit a hole in my wheel barrow tire  >:(  I won't hold back next time.

cfarm, I am glad your teaching and encouraging your grandson to hunt.  We are loosing more and more hunters (and fishermen) every year in this country. There are some sad statistics that prove this.  He is the future of hunting.

I don't know anything about average size black bears, but for your grandson to kill a bear bigger than himself, is very impressive in my book.

 I have always enjoyed seeing a youngster get their first bear. Good for you guys.

Here is the tastiest Bear roast recipe I know of, and I have ate a lot of bear meat.....

Put roast in covered pan, salt and pepper
cut up onion, potatoes and carrots, arrange in pan
pour over a bottle of Kraft catalina salad dressing

Cook at least 5 hours at 300 F, works good in the crockpot too.
The gravy is delicious, right out of the pan.

My stepson is the one taking him hunting.He is trying to get everything he can in front of him to shoot. He shot a turkey last year,no luck this year.Stepson does not care if he shots at all,wants his son to have it all.
I don't know if he will go after this one on my land or not.He set up a couple game cameras and got this.





He must hide pretty good through the day,because I never see it.Probaly have seen me a few times.I've never seen tracks yet either.
Where they shot the bear is probably 2 hours from here.
Come on up Jeff,you can be anyone you want for a day.  ;D

The Magicwoman and I are in the Smokies taking a short breather.  No trip is complete without seeing a bear, so here is ours.



We spotted this guy up in a Black Cherry tree.  It was really enjoying raking in the fruit.
