Anyone have any problem with the stock stihl mufflers?  I have had to replace two so far in a month and a half (same saw).  The insides just fall apart, rattle.  I am wondering if there is something else causing this.  Thanks for any input.

What model, seems like they cheapen up the lower models every year. I'd just cut it in half and throw the inside out and weld it back .    Steve

It is a 310.  Its just the saw I keep in my truck as a back up ground saw.  It is not overly used.  I might just do that pull the guts out and put it back together.

I don't have any experiance with this model but on some one piece mufflers a person can pry the seams apart, pull the bafflels then crimp them back together . Seems rather odd though that they would deteriate so rapidly . ???

SwampDonkey

Yes odd that. The only issue I have had with mufflers is the screen. They get replaced with a courser piece of SS screen and never foul up afterward.

:D Some of us outlaws just discard the screen as if it were a bad habit .

That'll give you a chance to find a new job. ;D

:D Nooo here in the middle of a giant corn field they don't get in a fuss just because you have a loud saw .In town though they do have coniption fits over kids with a speaker in the trunk about the size of a 55 gallon drum going kaboom-dd-boom - boom at 2 in the morning .Then again they might fuss if you ran a saw during the wee hours also .

SwampDonkey

It's about spark arresting not noise, especially when your 30 miles from the nearest town.  ;) Now out on my own woodlot, no one will even care or be there but me. But when working on a crew on crown land and no spark arrester, you'll be out of luck when the inspector has a looksie.

That probabley is true but keep in mind the difference in geography .Besides that I don't personally make a living with a chain saw . ;)

SwampDonkey

Ah, weekend firewood cutter. ;D

Now, around here they don't complain about car stereos. No ordinance in any town that I know of, just against truckers and their engine braking devices. :D

On that series of saw 290 310 390 you must keep muffler bolts tight or they will rattle themselves apart and wallow out holes around bolt areas. Just from what I have seen from guys 290's trashing mufflers.

Woodboogah

I tighten up the nuts when it is in use.  When the nuts got loose the first time that is what happened the bolt hole just got bored out and the insides rattled apart.  So after that I check the nuts frequently.  Thanks

When I eat something my body doesn't like, I barf it out. Maybe your saw is telling you something.

Woodboogah

Possibly.  I pulled the guts out and its back on.  See what happens
