I need suspenders.  First time for me.
I wear BDU's for work pants and will have to add buttons for button suspenders(which is what I'd prefer over clip)

I have two choices- metal press together buttons, or sewing in BDU style buttons.
Any experience with either type?  Do you prefer buttons on the inside of the waist or on the outside?

Brad, I would use the sew on buttons on the outside of the pants. Use a heavy duty quilt thread to sew them on with.

Just an FYI, the button style suspenders are actually called Bracers. Where did you pick up the full X pattern from?

For sewing on the buttons you can also go to the local archery shop and get a spool of line they use for making bow strings. I use it all the time for different sewing projects. You can't break that stuff.

I am an "old outdoor equipment guy", lots of sewing and repair of packs, tents, boats, bikes etc,.....for an outdoor program for teens (I repaired ALOT of stuff). The problem I see with the threaded buttons in BDU's is that the material will flex. Those screw on's would be best in stiff denim, not softish cotton. Just my opinion.

I like the bow string idea, that is good STUFF.

Radar67, those suspenders(I mean bracers), are on the workinggear.com website (FIL-200_TN_XL).  Not sure if they are in stock, but I plan to find out.

I do intend to reinforce the BDU waistband at the button locations with another layer of ripstop fabric before I sew in buttons.  The synthetic thread is a good idea(bowstring and dental floss are probably nylon).  I'll either use a combination of synthetic and some heavy thread I have or just the thread, which is tough enough as I think it is nylon too.

Thanks for the replies fellas.  I just can't stand my pants falling down any more.  It doesn't matter how tight I make my web belt, they still work their way down.  Not enough hip to keep them up.  With Bracers, I won't need to have my belt so tight, and will no longer show everyone my plumbers crack.

I wanted some Bibs because chaps would pull my pants down when cutting trees and I was hating it.
It was so much easier for me to wear the chaps over these bibs.
Turns out I wore them things on most days because they are so comfortable.
I wear a necktie for 48 weeks out of the year so this is somewhat of a release. :D
They are good for cooking and mowing also.  Suspenders maybe another good option though.

I wear bibs most all the time. can't seem to get use to the suspenders I do believe your on to something with the buttons those aligator clip ones will put your eye out if your not careful; bending over.

Yeah, this summer I actually was wearing period 1860's work clothes and the suspenders I had purchased were inferior replicas that broke.  But I realized that I liked wearing the period cotton shirt and suspenders.  I'll use my BDU's for everyday work, and break out the period stuff on special occations.
   Not quite ready for bibs.

Having used both clip type suspenders and braces with both metal and sewn on buttons -both inside and out, I finally found suspenders that don't tear up the pants, snap open, or have buttons that come loose or tear out at inopportune times. They are called Perry suspenders (google it).  They hook on to a belt and are the most comfortable and reliable suspenders I have ever used.

BaldBob you beat me to it.  I just tonight ordered a pair of the perry suspenders from belt outlet.  I have a pair of pants from duluth trading  and the back belt loop is too wide for the y back perry so I also ordered a  pair  of welch x back  suspenders that have loops for the belt to go through

Bowstring is not nylon. Some of it is dacron some is kevlar although that is not recommended any more. Some of the newer materials are an HMPE ( better known as Spectra and Dyneema ) and a blend of HMPE and Vectran.
