My 70's  045 came without the chain brake. Is there a conversion kit available to add the brake?

Very doubtful.
Similar to my '75 model 041 without a brake, and seems to add it would be a real modification of many saw parts.
Have you checked it out with your Stihl dealer?
I have an MS361 now, and seldom if ever, use the brake. Guess it is there for that one time I get a kickback.

Even if you could, the conversion would without doubt cost more than what the saw is worth.

Would it be possible to use one from an 056?

Theres one on ebay now, just type in "stihl chain brake" it was just on the first page.
