Should I be setting the carbs on my saws with the bar and chain or with out? ???

I always set my carb with the bar so the chain won't run and it will still idle.

I always set thecarb with chain on. Gives me a better feel for idle and throttle response. Once, I was setting up a Homelite, I believe an XL-12, without the bar, chain, or cover. I was (foolishly) pinning it up then down when BANG and there were clutch parts flying everywhere. The screw on rotor decided it had had enough and was leaving. A shoe was embedded in the drywall and I never did find the springs. Never did that again
