I was sorta wondering about those loads and your out/in.  I am confident that you will be OK.

Yes, I am looking forward to April.

Yes well, sad to say I found the solution to the in/out/ cashflow nightmares/unhappy wife dilemma last November. Or rather it was found for me.

I am contractually obligated to purchase logs through to (at least) August 2019, and I would have regretfully got out after that but she wouldn't wait that long - we separated 12 months prior to divorce, so with 18 months left on contract - and someone else had stepped up to fill the gap of husband not present in the meantime. Guess that was bound to happen with her returning to the US, but I'm pretty sure he was in the picture about what was happening well before I was. its actually rather sad... I actually like my now ex wife, and I loved her despite our chalk and cheese differences about a lot of things.

On the bright side with no finance committee to argue about every dollar spent on logs or equipment I've been able to go forward, and am now doing some serious upgrades because it's time to play the game for real.

I'm sorry to hear things didn't work out with you and your wife. Divorce is a tough thing to go through, I went through one about 15 years ago. On the bright side, I've replaced her with a much better model, this one likes to stay home at night and is very supportive of my sawmill venture. Stay focused on positive things and you'll be ahead of the game before you know it.

That's some sure enough serious walnut.  I milled walnut today from about dawn until way after dusk because the rain finally let up and I called in some help because I was way behind. The log yard was a pond, gravel was dissapering as soon as we'd dump it and there was standing water everywhere but we burned through the walnut today, but not like those.  Around here 24" is pretty decent.

I also am looking forward to meeting you guys in April.

Sounds like the muck here. 6" snow melting on an already oversaturated ground, no sun ever, and more rain coming this weekend. For for first time in a while, I am gonna listen to my wife and go get muck boots instead of my normal steel-toed ones! :D

Some Saturday eye-candy wood to start off the weekend. Been on a run of great stuff lately...

Curly walnut with nice rolling figure throughout.

Monster soft maple log (50"). I had to saw off 2' of the end in order to move it. So, cut it 10 and 12/4 to see what's in store. Gem of a log.

Big hard maple. Exhibited nice figure, so went for some quartersawn gold for instruments and gun stocks. Did not disappoint.

After the quarter ran out (no YellowHammer, no RRQS on this stuff...too much waste ;D). I went for sapwood gold as wide as possible. Perfect all sap 22" with a busy, curly/quilted figure woven in.

This stuff is the reason I saw!  ;D :o

Beautiful stuff! I really like the maple with the dark patches. That's a good reason to saw!!

Spent seven hours custom sawing walnut logs today.  Was fortunate to set up under a shed at the local builders' supply.  One log was 36" one way and 44" the other.  It was a challenge with an LT35 but neither of us tucked tail and ran!

Not sawing them yet... But Lil's Uncle sent me a couple of pics the other day, with a "Can I mill these?"

"Yeah.. what are they?"

Tasmanian Blackwood. They are getting cut up for firewood otherwise...
Blackwood is a close relative of Hawaiian Koa if you've never come across it, similar look and wood properties, and only slightly less valuable.

Went and met up with the land owner today, and he's had it milled in the past and made into furniture, but the guy that did the last lot has gone AWOL. So he knows what it is, but he's also happy to cut it on shares, which I'm happy to do with a wood this good.

Just got to find a couple of free days to get the mill up there an deal to it.  :-\

The property is an old horticulture block, and these are shelter belt trees. Lots more left, and some other interesting stuff, so he may be a good contact in the future as well.

I was going to say what are you doing this side the ditch? I could tell what they were just looking at them... i dont see much Blackwood this far north but we have a couple of other acacias that are very similar in any case.

Nice little score.... that twisty one at the bottom looks like he'll produce the goods.

I agreed to do a demo for our regional Soil Conservation District Workshop today. The guys there had put a lot of work into it so I delayed my trip to Charlotte to see my new granddaughter to do the demo. It was raining and miserable and this was the first trip I ever made with the cover on the head. It rode well that way. They had a big garage I could just drive into, disconnect and pull forward a few feet. Now I'm here to tell you - I could get used setting up on a level concrete pad! That was the cat's meow.I was worried nobody would show but they had advertised as rain or shine and had people waiting even though I got there over an hour early to set up. I guess we had 20 or so people come watch. They were supposed to have me some poplar logs and they did have several about 10-12 inches in diameter but they sneaked a couple of red oaks in ahead. The flare on the butt log was 23" and about all I could sneak my guide rollers past while the little end was about 16" inside the bark. I sawed one log into 8/4 LE slabs for one of guys to make a table from and I sawed the butt log into some pretty 12" X 4/4 X 10' boards. I hit one knot that was so hard it knocked the set off my blade but I replaced it and the chatter was gone. Total yield about 255 bf. I took a picture or two of the logs but not the lumber and forgot my card reader so can't load them yet. They asked me to come do another demo for a project they will be doing in September so I guess it all went well. I rushed home and unloaded the chain saw and leaf blower and left the mill connected and locked to the back of my truck and the rest of the kit covered in a tarp in the back then I rushed down to see my new GD. Boy is she cute. Look out catfish - your days are numbered.

Finally got the last batch of a $20,000 burst of 12 and 10 foot walnut logs sawn and edged.  This is what we did on the last day, Friday, despite the rain, a little over 2,600 bdft.  We edged them pretty hard and close, but the Baker edger smoked through them with a smile, and put it under cover today in our drying shed in the first sunshine I've seen in a while.  Yahoo, tired of sawing walnut.

Started dropping the standing dead pine this weekend.  Only got about 6 trees dropped and bucked to the sawmill.  Have over a dozen left to cut.  Had to drop one sacrificial tree to clear the drop zone.  Overall got 31 - 12'6" logs with diameters ranging from 10" to 18".  Will start sawing them tomorrow.  Only three showed any termite damage.  We will see what they look like when sawing.

Had a little fun today and went out and cut a cookie off of the stump from that big red oak I downed a couple of weeks ago.  36" x 48".  AnchorSealed it and will let it dry.  Hope I can make a nice table top from it sometime.

Its what people want to buy, so I have to saw it.  We mill about 20 other species but walnut is a mainstay.  I just hate spending $300-$400 per log.  Painful.  Definately need to make sure the toeboards are down.   :D
