Hi Magicman, I had jobs that seem to never end.

A&P saw Mill LLC.
45' of Wood Mizer, cutting since 1987.
License NH softwood grader.

MM, sorry if I haven't been paying close enough attention, but for this job, I'm assuming you're staying in a hotel, and sawing for multiple days in a row?  I'm guessing you're about 4:15 or so  from home.  Not worth it to just saw for one day.  Is he paying you a travel fee?  That's a full tank of fuel or more round trip and a lotta hours in the truck.

Most condos I've seen, they're trying to build them as cheaply as possible.  Seems maybe your customer cares a little more about his work?  I've never seen a builder like that use the green trees off the property in the building project.
Anything someone can design, I can sure figure out how to fix!
If I say it\\\\\\\'s going to take so long, multiply that by at least 3!

Magicman

Oh yes, travel and setup plus staying at the Hampton Inn.  I have been able to work 5-6 days each trip.  8-10 hours per day @ hourly rate.

Yes Peter, I have no idea where the end of this job is.  PatD drove up too.  Some additional expenses on my part but worth it.

YellowHammer

That is an impressive, extended road trip.
YellowHammerisms:

Take steps to save steps.

If it won't roll, its not a log; it's still a tree.  Sawmills cut logs, not trees.

Kiln drying wood: When the cookies are burned, they're burned, and you can't fix them.

Sawing is fun for the first couple million boards.

Be smarter than the sawdust

Jim_Rogers

This week I cut or edged some boards left over from a huge clear butt log I had and got a good pile of clear boards. All but one are clear on both sides.

I hope I can sell these soon.

Very nice Jim.

Rob, I am using 1-2 blades per day so they are not an issue.  I brought 20.

I have 6 more logs to handle today and then I will move and park it.  I will be off next week while he fells and bunches more logs and will return the following or the week after.

On Wednesday and today, I sawed up one huge white pine log into 51 pieces of quarter sawn lumber. All sold to one customer.
I got some 1x12's, 1x11's, 1x7's, 1x6's, 1x5's and a few 1x4's. He didn't care if some of the widths were in odd inches.
I used one blade and my time clock moved 2 hrs and 15 minutes. But most likely it wasn't on during some edging.
I'd guess closer to 3 hours.

Jim Rogers
It was the log with the red "x" on it in this picture:

The one with the sticker leaning on it was the one I got all the clear lumber out of.

You know you would think a guy like me would look at that photo and think "OH, nice load of straight logs". Normally that would be true, but tonight I saw that photo and the first thing that came in my head was "Oh, look at that hard dry ground and blue sky, looks warm too." I guess everything is relative. I am SO ready for the season to start rolling over.

How do you cut the bands before you cut the barrel? (And it occurs to me you are more in good whiskey county an I am wondering why such a fresh barrel is not being re-used for something a bit 'finer'?)

Side grinder! Just have to lay it out before you cut it. Bourbon can only be made in a new barrel....so after that it comes to me or goes to the scotch makers or rum makers
