Osage-orange is the only wood I know of with wood that color and such a narrow sapwood band. Eastern redbud is the next closest possibility, but the wood tends not to have the orangish cast that you see in that picture. Same with mulberry and black locust. They lean more towards a pure yellow or greenish yellow than orange-yellow. I dunno. If it ain't osage, I'm stumped.

GOOGLE SUMAC

Notice the width of his sample.  I think I'm correct. ;)  Pete and I have used it for making strikers on Turkey Calls. Looks correct to me.

You could very well be right, Jeff. I've sawed up some sumac for wood samples before, and it was much more greenish than orange, but the pictures in your link definitely bear a strong resemblance to the mystery wood.

American smoketree. Cotinus obovatus. Or possibly European smoketree, Cotinus coggyria.

I really shoulda known that. I used to have a sample of it.  :-\

Very interesting, and I notice that it is closely related to Sumac.  I had the "American" part right, but it was Chittamwood instead of Gopherwood.   ::)
