I've had this tree in my yard since I moved here. I always thought it was a holly but I looked it up online and the leaves don't look like holly leaves. Any ideas?

Looks like black gum to me.

If you ever plan to harvest it for firewood, I hope you have a log splitter. Worst splitting wood EVER....

Yep,  black gum. Branches should come off at a 90 degree angle from the trunk, and the fruit will turn blackish purple.

Thanks fellas. The bark looks different than the black gum saw logs I've seen, but I guess it gets that blocky look as the tree matures.

Once they get over 12"-14" they look like that here, after logs sit for 2 years they completely rot out, very perishable. Harder to split then sweetgum or elm or anything else I have found. A friend of mine tried to split some 12" pieces with a 20 ton log splitter and kept stalling it out.

The drupes and the accuminate leaves tell the tale.  The big ones growing on the uplands get very knobby bark.

If you split the pith, you will see that it is diagrammed  :).

It's a GREAT fall tree, with wonderful color.  One of my fav's.

My father once said, "This is my son who wanted to grow up and become a doctor.  So far, he's only become a doctor."

One of the first trees for fall leaf color.  The ones here turn a deep red.
