Got myself a Grizzly G1023rlwx and a G0454W

Well I got myself a nice table saw and Planer for my 65th birthday.  The table saw is 5 hp and the planer is too.  I got the regular knife type and if I grow tired of that I'll switch to a Byrd cutter head which is way better than the spiral head that comes with the grizzly.  The carbide cutters are $7.00 a piece from Grizzly and the replacement cutters for the  Byrd cutter head are $3.00 a piece.   The knifes for the planer are $89.00 a set, so I'll keep one extra set.  My buddy has a sharpener made for planer knifes so it won't cost me anything to sharpened them.  I'll have to get mighty tired of sharpening them to pay $1200.00 the Byrd head.    I'm excited.

  Sounds good ,I'd get that Byrd head soon as you can, those carbide cutters stay sharp about 50 times longer than steel knifes  and they don't chip out snarly wood near as bad.  The only downside is they will break if you feed a loose knot through the planer.  Where are you getting the cutters for $1.79, I need a new set.  Steve

My bad on price of incerts--must have been reading an old post about price on the internet.  Tool barn has them for $3.00 a piece compared to $7.00 a piece from grizzly.  You can only use grizzly incerts on their cutter heads and not aftermarket.

I bought that same planer last fall, and the Byrd cutter head (thought 2 heads would be better than 1).  Just changed over to the Byrd head since I had been planing a lot of figured wood and getting tearout with the straight blade cutter head.  I'll never go back, not so much because of the quality of the cut, changing out the head is a real PITA.  Took about 4 hours, and that was because I had a press available for the bearings.  Have heard reports of 3-6 hours for those doing it the first time.

Yep... I changed heads at work... And let me tell you those  carbide cutters are sharp
and very hard to handle... Gloves are a must... I got a free 20" head because someone
forgot to countersink 3 of the  carbide cutter mounting holes. Everytime you tryed
to tighten the screws it would break the  carbide cutters. I was an easy fix.

I am thinking abuot one of these planers and was wondering if anyone with one could tell me if without the tables it would fit through  a 32 inch door with a 31 inch clearance that is the only entrance to my shop. Just got a 10% off coupon email and it is tempting me. Thanks

You know Tom there's this great company just down the road from you that makes planers right here in the US of A with super-easy cutter-head change-over.  :D

I put a byrd on my little DeWalt and I love it.  Seems to work less hard and is less noisy.
