Friday afternoon as I had 2 logs left to saw for the day a couple friends stopped in and we visited for a hour or so and I decided to call it a day.  Well I went to the mill this morning for a couple boards and discovered that I never released the pressure on the tensioner.  It was at 3000 lbs when I walked away Friday and it was down to about 1500 this morning.  I released the remaining pressure and went about the day and will be trying to saw tomorrow. Been bugging me all day, anyone ever do that and cause any damage?

You should be fine.  As the temperature dropped overnight, so did your hydraulic pressure.  If you left 3000 psi on it in the full sun in summer time, it might get hot enough to raise the pressure enough to mess up the gauge or a seal.

Look at it like this.......you got away with one.  :D :D :D

Usually once or twice its ok.....but sooner or later if ya keep doing it, you'll return to see your PSI gauge full of ATF.

This is not good. Kirk and I always remind each other to take the pressure off the blade at the end of the day and before we go to lunch.
I've even went to the mill just to check late at night.

That's funny, Thought I was the only one that does things like that. I blamed it on my OCD.

Thanks, I should be able to sleep tonight. It's the first time I forgot but I have gone down a dozen times with a flashlight cause it couldn't remember releasing it.

If you always removed the blade at the end of the sawing day, you would never forget to release the tension.   ;D

MM --  What's the purpose of removing the blade at the end of the day?     If I only cut a few hundred board feet or less and haven't hit anything I start the next day with the same blade.    I leave it on until it needs to be changed.

I saw portable so my next day is always subject to change either by myself, the customer, or the weather.  We may have good intentions of sawing the next morning and it may be several days or a week before I get back.

There is always an amount of wet sawdust between the blade and bandwheel.  This will cause the blade to form rust where this contact is made and I don't like that.

I have a day ending and day startup ritual with my cleaning and lubing.  I like everything neat and tidy.

Safety in case a child happens to mess around the sawmill after I leave.  I often see little footprints in the sawdust, so it does happen.  That blade would/could be an irresistible fascination.

I agree with Lynn, if you leave the blade on overnight, there will be some rust forming wherever the blade is in contact with the blade wheels!

It only takes a couple of minutes to remove the blade and wipe it down.

I'm with Dr Buck.
I take my blades off when they get dull.
The only time I have had rust is when I leave it for several days and the rust disappears the next time I saw.

I always de-tension at lunch time and hang my leather apron on the tension lever as a reminder to tension up before resuming sawing.
