wont start

I have a stihl 044 and the starter most of the time only pulls out about hafly way and seems to get stuck like it hits something.

I took to the shop and they checked the flyweel and they said it started fine.

Has the rewind spring or pull cord ever been worked on before?

The saw was my brothers father in law who passed away.

So i dont know if there was any thing done to it before.

when you pull the rope it seems to hit something smoke also does come out the muffler.

The rewind spring might be bad i guess.

The rope has to be a certain length(40") along with a certain number of turns(3) when winding the spring.
Sometimes the rope gets pulled out of the pulley and won't wind properly.
The shaft should have a little grease on it as well.
All you can do is pull the side cover off and inspect it.
