What's actually happening is that the human eye's colour vision is poor in really low light. We use different sensor cells in our eyes in the "dark". They pick up much fainter light, but not colours. The camera is using the same sensor, but adjusting the exposure time to collect enough light to make an image. So it's able to show the actual colours, that may be too faint for us to pick up.

It's basically the same as if you wander around under moonlight. Things appear more black and white because the light is too dull to discern colours. But a good camera can pick up a full colour image, given a few seconds to collect enough light.

Holy cow Rob! Is that a single cut slab with the pith in it? I can't even see that in there. There is so much going on in that slab. I can see getting the cup out, but I can't even imagine how you deal with twist. When I get  those, I surrender and they become shorter and narrower. ffcheesy

The finesse part is knowing how to deconstruct the wood, re-form it into what you want, with minimal evidence of what you have done. This is a pic of a smash re-aligned countertop from 2 pieces of wood that had maybe 7" of twist, warp and cup, depending on where you wanted to measure the potato chip like pieces to start out with. Finesse plays a great part and so does brute force in getting to the outcome. Anyway, the point I am trying to make is that pith plays a valuable part in what we sell, what we do and what we are known for.

Sawmills and Milling / Re: The Opening Face

We do not make the rules, that is the log's job, but generally speaking; sawing through from either the hump or horn faces will yield lumber that will tend to bow which is OK for framing lumber.

Sawing through from the side will generally yield lumber that will tend to crook instead of bow.  That lumber can be edged to remove the crook and is desired/required for woodworkers building furniture, cabinets, etc.

Again, your opening face and turning sequence will determine whether the lumber that you produce will tend to bow or crook.

YH has a most excellent video detailing log setup and the sawing sequence for producing high quality furniture grade lumber.

Dear TPT:
When using those "finer woodworking tools", it must require a lot of finess (sp).

We had some great displays here, more solid colour than dancing colour. In the past I have seen some great displays. I also noticed the camera shots turned it more pink than it was in real life.
I live about 5 miles from a Dark sky Park, Torrence Barrens, The citiots drive 1-2 hrs to come and view the night sky. I haven't seen that many cars as last night since covid. I counted 40 cars going past my place in 5 mins. They just kept coming all night. I live 20 minutes from town on a winding pothole filled road.
