I was fixing to add that here now but I see you beat me to it a couple of posts back. Yes, that was a common saying.
I could go into the long "Single Significant Emotional Event" (SSEE) theory of management where people spend all their time trying to identify the SSEE that caused someone to go awry but the bottom line is the proper technique is to disregard the previous SSEE and create a much more significant SSEE that will override the previous SSEE and get the person back on the straight and narrow.
I.e. When a person was 6 his older brother stepped on his pet butterfly and this caused him as a grown man to disregard proper respect for authority or mission accomplishment so you need to take appropriate action to get the young man to forget about the &^%$* butterfly and remember how painful it was to sit for a while and correct his attitude.

A bit off topic but something I learned yesterday about a quote we often hear.
"Neither snow, nor rain, nor heat, nor gloom of night stays these courageous couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds" was said about 2500 years ago by the Greek historian, Herodotus. He said this adage during the war between the Greeks and Persians about 500 B.C. in reference to the Persian mounted postal couriers whom he observed and held in high esteem.
King Darius I built The Royal Road, one of history's first great roads in the 5th century BC, well before the famous Roman roads. The Royal Road was 1677 miles long across his Persian kingdom. The journey across the kingdom took 90 days on foot. After the road was built his couriers were expected to be able to carry messages from end to end in 9 days in the same way our pony express operated with fast horses and way stations every 15-20 miles. As an aside, this Darius is not Daniel and the lion's den's "king" but the timing and "begats" says it was probably the good king Darius mentioned in Ezra who had his persian governor of Judea, Tattenai, stand down in no uncertain terms! and let the Jews rebuild their temple, helping to pay for it out of his treasury.

Correction per wikipedia Ralph Waldo Emerson (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ralph_Waldo_Emerson)
An amazing 2 letter English word
A reminder that one word in the English language that can be a noun, verb, adjective, adverb and preposition.
UP
This two-letter word in English has more meanings than any other two-letter word. The word "UP". It is listed in the dictionary as an [adv.], [prep.], [adj.], [n] or [v].
It's easy to understand UP, meaning toward the sky or at the top of the list, but when we awaken in the morning, why do we wake UP?
At a meeting, why does a topic come UP? Why do we speak UP, and why are politicians UP for election and why is it UP to the secretary to write UP a report? We call UP our friends, brighten UP a room, polish UP the silver, warm UP the leftovers and clean UP the kitchen. We lock UP the house and fix UP the old car.
At other times, this little word has real special meaning. People stir UP trouble, line UP for tickets, work UP an appetite, and think UP excuses.
To be dressed is one thing but to be dressed UP is special.
And this UP is confusing: A drain must be opened UP because it is clogged UP.
We open UP a store in the morning but we close it UP at night. We seem to be pretty mixed UP about UP!
To be knowledgeable about the proper uses of UP, look UP the word UP in the dictionary. In a desk-sized dictionary, it takes UP almost 1/4 of the page and can add UP to about thirty definitions.
If you are UP to it, you might try building UP a list of the many ways UP is used. It will take UP a lot of your time, but if you don't give UP, you may wind UP with a hundred or more.
When it threatens to rain, we say it is clouding UP. Then when the sun comes out, we say it is clearing UP. When it rains, the earth soaks it UP. When it does not rain for awhile, things dry UP. One could go on and on, but I'll wrap it UP, for now . . . my time is UP!
