Title: Logs to drool over!
Post by: T Welsh on December 11, 2012, 06:17:59 AM
After reading Kilgrosh,s thread about a cherry log. And seeing the replies,I though wouldn't it be neat with Christmas around the corner to see cool logs that our membership have cut and all the rest of us can just DROOL!!!

Beautiful boards, love the pictures.  My SO says we live in a log graveyard, she says I'm obsessed. I tell her some people collect coins and other things, I like to collect logs and boards.  I have a hard time using my my nicest boards to make things and usually use the junky stuff, saving the the nicest for that special piece of furniture that someday I'm going to build. :D  Here's some walnut I finally cut up this weekend from a log I've been saving for 5 years, before I had my lt15. Sap wood was fluff but the heart was nice.

Thanks David but in retrospect, I probably would have made more selling the log as a veneer log. Too soon old, too late smart!

Tamarisk from the banks of the Rio Grande. A local park removes and stacks them in a firewood/rot pile for anybody to access. I get some burly, colorful logs from there.

WHAT?  I spent over 20 years out there in the Albq. area , fighting the dreaded cottonwoods, olives, and other invasive species along the bosque while duck hunting the rio grande and never noticed the tamarisk. But then i was not milling anything either, working to much on other things.

That slab you have makes me wanna' swing back out there for a while to investigate what I have apparently missed.

thanks for sharing. Stump

I got these logs just south of Elephant Butte, in Caballo, where the green chili grows :) I get the bigger tamarisks and screw bean mesquites. The mesquite looks great, too. The screw bean looks more like a rosewood than a mesquite. I'll try to get a pic. I have one slab left.

Cstump, how big was that log before you got it down to that cant? Did it have any light-colored sapwood, and/or was that brown color from soaking up swamp water all those years, or just from the color of the heartwood?
Title: Re: Logs to drool over!
Post by: Cypressstump on December 12, 2012, 12:20:31 AM
It was around 54" dia on the butt and 46 foot long when it forked. Sapwood was 3 2-3 inches deep ,dark brown but when air hit the old stuff it turned black in a few seconds.

MM, that's a nice one. Looks like it's been dry for a while?

The log in my avatar is also a double heart sinker. I cut it with the two hearts laying horizontal, into 1 1/2" and 2" boards for counter tops and the two very center boards to be made into a table with the two boards joined end to end. I did not take any pictures of it tho'......It made some fine boards.

:D I was just going to say that maybe they grow differently here.  I've got some drying now that was actually black on the ends of the logs when I cut them.  I have one more of that delivery to cut.  I'll post a pic of it tomorrow.  Of course it's been sitting awhile so.  I'd have to ask Ronnie how long.

I could never match his talent for 2X6's and 2X4's! I will never try.

All I could get out of SYP (Virginia Pine strain) was live-edge lapsiding today. This picture is showing the angle of the cant.

It was my first lapsiding cant, and I learned a few things.

Also seen in the picture is our Mech Angel, appearing in a puff of smoke, as usual.  ;D

Here are a couple boards from a nice oily sinker cypress log, still trying to find the whole log pictures, these boards came from the double hearted log in my avatar.. The cypressene oil in some logs varies, this log was very heavy due to the high oil concentrations, and it has a wonderful smell to it as well.

I HAD 4 erc 1 inch thick boards that were 16 in wide, 7 foot long,  cant find the photo  :-[.
They were full of random brown rot but looked like magic's pecky cypress.

Q: what causes the effect of the "pecky"  is it a fungus too?

Everyone likes to protect their market, were all in it together, all learned from someone . Only way to be top in your game is to be selling something that no one else has.
Sam seems to be an upstanding guy!
I did send a message to sam, told him what im up to with a big slabber project,  19hp with tandem pump flowing 14.7 gal each ect. 5 foot dia log ect, told him bout my other slabber I built ect,  asked what he powered his with .
To summarize, 40hp diesel, all hydro drive and feed. And can do a 9' diameter.
Hopefully someone combing the web reads this, and sends a monster log his way.

shelbycharger400, Your right about a niche market. I live within 20 minutes of Talerico and Hearnes, and regularly sell logs to Hearnes. Both are stand up business owners. And both use there large slabbers for themselves. They will do a customers log at special request with very high cost per hour rates. Why! Because they are the only ones around that can do that type of sawing! Have the equipment on hand to handle the weight of these logs and the facilities to accommodate large trucks, ect. My hat is off to them, they have worked hard to get where they are at. Tim

This log made some of the finest straight grain lumber you'll see. The log story is over but the raised panel exterior doors, counter tops and other projects that will come from this will last a lifetime. Had fun doing this, hope to hear about some of your log stories."  Jim

Hey Magic,  Does that willow get milled or put up rough? Very pretty. Most think willow is a junk tree, but I think it's beautiful and perfect for ceiling and paneling. Beautiful and light. Do you have any pictures of the finished product or is this for one of your customers that you didn't get to see the end of the project. Thanks for the nice pictures everyone.

Not a sinker, but a floater.  When the Mississippi River is flooded, the customer will retrieve floating logs and corral them at a location by roping them to trees.

I am sure that the lumber will be planed & T&G, etc. before being used in the customer's home.

This Black Willow was fresh felled and not floaters.

mesquite buckeye,Yup,He asked me for a special walnut log and I dug it out of my stash pile that I keep on hand for just this reason.I have not gone through my Walnut pile yet,but I just went through my Cherry piles and trimmed the ends and put them into one pile to keep track of them.

(https://forestryforum.com/gallery/albums/userpics/27356/Cherry_and_pine_logs_004.jpg) They sometimes get thrown onto the firewood processor and get cut up for firewood. (I hate when that happens :D) Here is a picture of some Walnut piles

Well, its more of a chisel and hammer deal to split the ribs apart. Watch for scorpions the whole time, since they like it in there, and avoid the rattlesnake laying in the shade under the dead cactus.

I usually just split them. It shows the pith rays really nicely, but you can smooth one side on a jointer then mill boards out of them on the table saw.

You might be able to saw on on the woodmizer, but there is a chance something would catch and blow the whole thing apart.

Yesterday's work, 12' long white pine log, scaled 310 international. We were too busy sawying to count how many bf of boards we got out. That's a 20 inch cant.

This is a red oak from a few years back. 12' long, had to slab it down with a chainsaw to get it on the mill, ended up with a 28" cant. Wish I had taken more pictures as we went along.

It wasn't a very long walnut log, it was about 5 ft long and about 38-46" wide.  But it was some of the nicest looking wood I've ever cut.  It was one of those logs you didn't expect much from.  I was pleasantly surprised.  The whole flitch sold in 4 days. 8)

Just did this yesterday

Old man pine log someone had slabbed with a chainsaw mill, meant I could fit it on the WM - JUST.
Tractor couldn't lift it, the mill could lift it, but not turn it, but together we got there!?
6.0m long and as wide as the log clamp would  just allow.
Very similar heartwood to what Okrafarmer posted up above, I didn't take a picture  :(

And something different
(https://forestryforum.com/gallery/albums/userpics/29851/manuka.jpg)

New Zealand manuka which is a native tree that establishes an area but doesn't get very big, letting the larger native trees establish in shelter.
Thought It was very pretty freshly cut like that.

Cheers
Justin

It's an evergreen hardwood. Only ever grows into a small tree, but grows pretty much any place.

Usually used for firewood, smoking wood and the honey from it is very good. The wood is very hard and strong, but it's hard to find a log more than 6" dia.

There are some fancier flowering varieties that are sold as garden plants too.

I'm running with the cover/s (idle and center) off yes, only because I don't have them and the NZ woodmizer agent seems to be taking AGES to get me new ones.

I ran at a show a little while ago and just borrowed covers from another mill locally, and The NZ agent had a spare drive side cover, but yes, must chase that up as I do hate having to make sure people are clear and not in front when I'm milling away...

Nice timber Rob Bocik?! very nice!

If that pecky cypress is so valuable, maybe I'll find a market for pecky oak.  This came off a friend's sawmill.

We recovered ten large 2" thick slabs, half a dozen or so smaller 1 1/2" thick slabs, and a 4" (across the heart) from that one log, and a whole lotta sawdust. All showed fantastic grain - even for monkey pod which is always pretty.

Sadly - here at least - they aren't worth much. Limited population, long way to freight it to where the peoples live yada yada yada. My agent will do well from them though.
Might clear a carton of beer on each, and I don't drink expensive beer. Mind, there are worse things in the world then having a dozen cartons of beer in the fridge. :D

I'd be hauling pieces of wood like that to some place where they do sell.

Someone is going to build $2,000+ tables out of those, they can afford to pay you $500 for the wood.

Do the sums on 10 slabs like that, and it's worth a trip to the big smoke with a trailer load.  ;)

No, I sawed it into one inch boards. I had no trouble selling them. It's hard to decide how to saw a log like that, but I guess really nice lumber will always be in demand whatever form it's in.

I saw some yellow poplar logs laying at the side of the yard of a guy that I know, so I stopped in and asked what he was going to do with them.  Offered to saw them on halves, but he said that he did not need any lumber, but that I could have them.  Time goes by.  More time goes by.  Then, more time goes by.  Finally, today, I went and got the rotten logs  :).  Well, not quite totally rotten, just close.

So what is the plan, selling or use it?  :D

Peter,

There are six logs in all, and I have opened up two and they were both beautifully spalted.  The plan is to cut 4" thick blocks and to sell them to the bowl turners.
Title: Re: Logs to drool over!
Post by: cutterboy on July 08, 2013, 06:56:27 PM
OMG, WDH, free logs that are nicely spalted. Now that is something to drool over. Is it just the sap wood that spalts or is the heart wood spalted as well?
Now you got me thinking. I left a couple of red maple logs out in the woods a couple of years ago. Maybe I'll try to find them.
Title: Re: Logs to drool over!
Post by: WDH on July 08, 2013, 07:46:15 PM
There is much more spalting in the sapwood than in the heartwood.  As you get more to the center of the log, the spalting disappears.

I have some hard maple that's been down in a pile for a year and a falf,
With the Spalted thing the timing is everything. :D :D
WDH will you use hot wax to seal them?

Picked up this ugly piece with a load of walnut.
Studied it for a while how I wanted to mill it.

Idk what it is? Burl ? Was a growth of a branch of a butt log.

Fishpimp, that's about the most unusual piece I've ever seen.  A wood carver would have a great time with a piece like that.

Has anyone milled roots?  Lots of embedded rocks, but some pretty wood inside.

My wife's in the States so... working weekends too.
I kinda like weekends, it's when I get time to cut at my own pace and do the stuff that probably isn't commercial, either logs I'm expecting trouble with or jobs for mates.

Like this one... Fruitwood as it's called, which I guess sounds far more marketable then mango tree.

Woulda been nice except for that horrible value reducing staining... ummm spalting :D

I believe MM said he salvaged that single hook from either a cant hook or half a logging tong. Might just call it a single hook, as they have been used for many years in logging to handle logs by 'end' dogging them. Member Loggah might know an 'official' name.

I always called them "end tongs" but I have also heard them called "end hooks".

I made mine from broken logging tongs.

Using them is a very safe way to pick logs up because the log's weight forces the hook into the log's end.

Title: Re: Logs to drool over!

Poston, the shake out hooks, otherwise known as pelican hooks, can be bought at any wire, rope, rigging supply house.  I am not sure if they would work on logs.  The intention of the shake out hook is to slide the hook onto the web of the beam at the end and the other hook would be opposite side making the beam hang with the flanges on the top and bottom.  I think that if the tips of the hooks were ground to a point, they might work on logs.
Title: Re: Logs to drool over!
Post by: Philngruvy on August 03, 2013, 08:40:01 PM
I just tried to do a search for the shakeout hooks and I came up empty.  I have been out of the business for quite some time, so maybe they are not used any longer due to safety regulations or something.

What a terrific Thread! All the different pictures of the slabs would make a nice book. Hello Poston LT40 HD, Them hooks that MagicMan uses can be had in Tow Truck supplies catalog's, they have many sizes and shapes, tips may need sharpening.  Coverture may need modification, They are pricey! Maybe check with Opperators of tow trucks they may have a stock of used where chains or hooks on other end break.  "GOD BLESS and Happy New Year  Everybody"
