Heading to the farm in May. Hope to get some milling done...

I hate to leave logs sitting. They can go funky before I can get them done. :(

Some people dig funk these days. . . .

Well, while we're talking about logs to drool over, how about you show us a picture of a saguaro cactus on the sawmill?

Well, its more of a chisel and hammer deal to split the ribs apart. Watch for scorpions the whole time, since they like it in there, and avoid the rattlesnake laying in the shade under the dead cactus.

I usually just split them. It shows the pith rays really nicely, but you can smooth one side on a jointer then mill boards out of them on the table saw.

You might be able to saw on on the woodmizer, but there is a chance something would catch and blow the whole thing apart.

Or were you kidding ??? 8) 8) 8) 8)

Sounds like fun! I've only seen Arizona from 35,000 ft. That's a nice little ditch you've got there!

I worked with Weyerhaeuser, and had a project at Talisheek.  The local Foresters told me that they did not cut any.

Was it da green leaves growing on it that gave away it being a " live " oak  :-\

That was my biggest clue, since he posted in January! Live oaks are evergreen (but broad-leafed and hardwood).

Yesterday's work, 12' long white pine log, scaled 310 international. We were too busy sawying to count how many bf of boards we got out. That's a 20 inch cant.

This is a red oak from a few years back. 12' long, had to slab it down with a chainsaw to get it on the mill, ended up with a 28" cant. Wish I had taken more pictures as we went along.

It wasn't a very long walnut log, it was about 5 ft long and about 38-46" wide.  But it was some of the nicest looking wood I've ever cut.  It was one of those logs you didn't expect much from.  I was pleasantly surprised.  The whole flitch sold in 4 days. 8)
