This is the last spalted maple I milled.   It was more of a fight than a milling job.   ;D

cutterboy that is beautiful.  i too was stunned by the first birch tree i opened up.  for me it's right up there with walnut in terms of "wow" factor.

A place to post pictures. 8)

One of the several raintrees (monkey pod) Samanea saman we've slabbed in the last two years. Not the biggest, but maybe the prettiest.

Wow!  That monkeypod has some of the wildest grain I've ever seen!  High dollar stuff for sure.  The birch is nice, too, especially when bookmatched like that.

Thanks Mike. I think Black Birch is one of the most beautiful hardwoods. It's very underrated. My brother calls it "poor man's cherry"

Lurker, that is one beautiful hunk of wood!

We recovered ten large 2" thick slabs, half a dozen or so smaller 1 1/2" thick slabs, and a 4" (across the heart) from that one log, and a whole lotta sawdust. All showed fantastic grain - even for monkey pod which is always pretty.

Sadly - here at least - they aren't worth much. Limited population, long way to freight it to where the peoples live yada yada yada. My agent will do well from them though.
Might clear a carton of beer on each, and I don't drink expensive beer. Mind, there are worse things in the world then having a dozen cartons of beer in the fridge. :D

I'd be hauling pieces of wood like that to some place where they do sell.

Someone is going to build $2,000+ tables out of those, they can afford to pay you $500 for the wood.

Do the sums on 10 slabs like that, and it's worth a trip to the big smoke with a trailer load.  ;)

That hickory sure is nice.  Did you slab the cherry?

No, I sawed it into one inch boards. I had no trouble selling them. It's hard to decide how to saw a log like that, but I guess really nice lumber will always be in demand whatever form it's in.

It is hard to mess up a log like that one.  Very nice.  I have a soft spot for cherry  :).

This being said, you may want to put your Cherry under lock and key at night.  :D

I saw some yellow poplar logs laying at the side of the yard of a guy that I know, so I stopped in and asked what he was going to do with them.  Offered to saw them on halves, but he said that he did not need any lumber, but that I could have them.  Time goes by.  More time goes by.  Then, more time goes by.  Finally, today, I went and got the rotten logs  :).  Well, not quite totally rotten, just close.

Almost perfect spalting  :-*.

That's what I like the most about opening up a log . You never know what's inside.
So what is the plan, selling or use it?  :D
