I hates 6' logs as well, but having the 4 backstops all hooked together on the new mill helps a lot and we set some rollers on the mill to help roll slabs and boards back to the operator makes it much more bearable.
Knots on logs makes them unique. Them ones without just don't have much going on.

Thankfully the logs that I finished sawing yesterday did not look like Jim's.   ;)

Getting ready to roll another one onto the sawmill loader.

A couple of the 14' logs were over 30" and needed the "Magic Chain" to snug them to the loader.

Yup, pretty good size.

Five cants (20") stacked for sawing 2X4's.  (I removed that bark between the cants after I took the picture.)

Yup, this broken .55 blade came out of the sawdust chute.  :o

The customer and his Daughter decided to bring the grill up to the sawing site for lunch.

Chicken "running gear" and pork chops for lunch.   food6

Longleaf Pine is some Purdy Stuff.   Total yield for two day's sawing was 4326bf.   :)

I will begin sawing an ERC/Cypress/SYP job Tuesday.

Mr MM I like the look of that kind of pine . The size of the logs and the grain in the wood .

Paul, how has the new mill fit into your operation? Are you still running two mills, or are you having trouble getting the lumber away from the Super fast enough? :D

Yes, that was a fine job.  The largest log butt was 35".  I sawed Loblolly, Slash, and Longleaf Pine, plus the customary two ERC logs e/w the customary nail sawed hourly rate.

All except one of the .55 blades that I had broke and I will trash it.  I am done with .55's, but I really like the .45 -7°X39  Turbos.

Jake (Customsawyer) and I cut some sycamore.  Quartersawed it of course :).  Jake procured the logs last Fall.  When we opened them up, there was some nice splat in the sapwood.  Yep, spalted, quartersawn, sycamore.  I bet that I can sell it for a dollar.

I think it is working out real well. It does about 2x the work in a day as we could do with one mill before.  The dragback is sure sweet. It makes me 8). We are still cutting some with the old electric mill, but we sold the newer 94model to help pay for Sarg's mill. The truth is I haven't cut 1 whole log with it myself. My 21 yo son Scott runs it daily.
I feel a little bad for WM parts as they haven't got to sell me much lately. Maybe I should call just to say ''Hi''? ;D
The most trouble we have with the new to me mill is keeping logs enough to feed it. Goin Good!!!
Since this is the watchya sawin thread, my answer is walnut this next week or 2.

Paul, your reports on your success with Willie's sawmill is very encouraging and I did not remember that it has 4 live Side Supports.  I only wish that mine did every time that I need them.  :-\   :D

Pine Man,

Yes, it keeps the color.  Good thing is that Jake has two more of these logs.  We will probably end up with over about 500 bf if I count the triangle shaped pieces that are usually waste using the octogon quartersawing method.  They were just too pretty to throw in the slab pile.  Anybody need any pen blanks or stock for jewelry boxes?  ;).

Jake, I put the triangle shaped pieces in the kiln, so they should be dry soon.  I will see what I can get out of them.

Actually I have accidentally made some triangles as well as some wedgewood when I forgot to lower a toe board or when I failed to notice a chunk of bark underneath a cant.  :o

I got a call today from another Forestry forum member who had already told the customer in Candia, NH that he'd do his job.
He was concerned that the customer was still interviewing sawyers for this job.

We talked a bit. I'm not sure if he's going to do the job or not.

We'll have to wait and see.

I would hate to get involved with a "shopping" customer and another FF member.  The last four road trips that I have sawn, I have passed FF members homes and setup quite close to some of them.  I only ask how they found me and it is business from there on out.  That is the reason that I avoid posting the actual location/town or even the direction that I travel.  One customer a couple of weeks ago volunteered some "not so choice" words concerning the quality of the local sawyer's lumber.  I just keep my mouth zipped up and my mind on sawing.

Yes MM I have the same experience with other mill owners in the area. And like you my policy is zipped lips too. I have had to clean up a few messy lumber stacks but I mostly chalk  that to a green horn that to has not had the good fortune to have a great teacher and mentor like have.

I also have no interaction whatsoever with any of the other local sawyers.  I know a couple of names, but have no telephone numbers.  I don't even know their sawing rates.  I figure that they know what their sawing is worth, and I certainly do not need any more business.

I'll move to a job tomorrow that could last up to a couple of weeks.  The customer got rid of the donkeys, but I still saw for him every year.  The ERC is slated to be exported to Saskatchewan, Canada.

I understood Jim, and I have referred two jobs this year to FF members.  One member that I know and have seen his work.  The other I have never met.   I have also had one job referred to me by a FF member this year.

My point was that if there is a possibility that a customer is avoiding a FF member or shopping around one, I will remain quiet so as not to offend.
