That's the results of theses new progressive glasses. I have never worn glasses until last fall. They mess with my depth perception when looking over my shoulder. Last winter while plowing snow I backed in to a loading dock protector. Was just creeping felt the bump and with the big winter boots on when I put the break on I was also pushing the gas pedal the harder I pushed the break the more the truck wanted to back up. :o This all happens in less that 2 seconds.

Had about 10 inches of heavy wet snow on ground and snowing hard.

Its a bear backing up to trailer now. Yep close enough, get out still 4 foot away. Climb back in back up some more, there got to be close, nope still a foot shy. Do all over again.
It heck getting old.

I sawed an Italian Plum trunk today.  This has been in my farm yard for years, about 7 inches in diameter and 4ft long trunk.  The tree started leaning years ago, probably from wind and softened wet soil.  Well this spring it was almost laid down and would have been a nightmare to mow and weedeat around.  So I pulled it out with a chain and my Farmall BN forklift, pressure washed the trunk.  I cut the roots off, and commenced to milling.  My thought was to mill 4/4 and laminate to make a mallet after the wood is dry. I got 4 6.75" boards, and 3 5.5" boards. Not bad for a little tree. ;D

Building quite a cabin here just for giggles.

Set the concrete posts and had planned to use some 10x10 reclaim Douglas Fir but the big beam I was going to cut in half didn't pan out quite long enough.  Fired up the mill and laid a bruzer of a white cedar log on it.  That single log gave me 2 pcs  10x10x9' and not a single knot in either piece.

Needless to say we CAREFULLY loaded it on the truck and drove SLOWLY to the site and GENTLY raised it into position.  "Not a scratch!!!" was all the boys heard from me for almost a hour.  Truly a beautiful showpiece.   I'm happy now...   8) 8) 8) 8)

I stand up a rake against the trailer hitch. When the ball hits the rake handle the rake moves and I can see that I am back enough. I don't have one of those fancy review camera in my SUV, yet.
I put a shin protector on my trailer ball so that I wouldn't mash my leg into it and that is what hits the rake handle:

Every page I see beautiful wood and learn something.

derhntr your red oak makes me want to try quartersawing some. (And I remember when I first got progressive lenses -- 3 different focal lengths in one lens. Made it to the parking lot before I marched back to the optometrist's office and asked, "How am I supposed to walk when the ground keeps moving up and down?!?" Takes some getting used to).

Brad_bb, hope that plum keeps its color and stays stable when dry. It's the odd ones that seem to have all the character.

Jim_Rogers, I don't do much trailering but I know someone who can sure benefit from that tip. Thanks!

Jim I like that protector. Last week when in a hurry came around back of truck and at full stride took the ball right on the knee cap. About knocked me to the ground. Limped most of the rest of the day. Of course I did it right in front of the wife too. Her comment was "That will leave a mark"

Quarter sawed, lots of work but worth the effort.

Been sawing maple between showers. Today the sun is shining, so maybe linen britches winter is over and I can saw when I want to. (Anybody else think coffee doesn't taste right without sawdust?)

Hope y'all don't mind a photo bomb.

Friday's puzzle:

Had to cut the weird end off for later.

I was trying to maximize how much good wood I could get around the rot, etc. Took it down in 1" slices, rotating as the urge hit, and took photos of each cut, but won't post them all. (Relieved, eh?)

Last chunk on the mill was about 2" thick and about 4 ft of it was sound. Think I got most of what was useful out.

What will the wood be used for?  As always thanks for the pictures.

If only it would dry up around here. >:( I am in need of framing lumber bad. Used the last this morning and it sure was last pickings. :D I can't get to my logs unless I rip up everything. Last time, I had to dig my way out with a log on the front of my hoe.

Rain this morning, rain later today and rain thru Friday morning. :'(

69,

Where do you guys get all those straight logs? Mine always seem to get bent on the way to the mill. :( :( :( :snowball:

We get really happy when we get a 6 foot log. :(

I finally made it to this month in this thread and just about fell out of my chair laughing. How would you go about sawing that thing?!? Had to show it to my wife and she said, "That has to be called a snake tree!"

Don't have the foggiest, yet. :D I'm just tickled I don't have to watch these trees turn to compost any more. Most of what I cut yesterday and today will become a heavy table, I hope.

69bronco: That's water maple. Planted a couple dozen or so of them about 35 years ago. My late father-in-law gave us the seedlings saying, "They're like weeds and not likely to make framing lumber, but you'll have quick shade and firewood." He was right on all counts.

Wow Sir, those are some fine Oak logs.   :o

My sawing today was of course more ERC.  I thought that we might finish until I was informed that there were 12-15 more tree length logs to be bucked.  Sigh, maybe next week.

This trailer is severely overloaded so the next ERC will be stacked on the tail end of the goosneck in the background.

Another trailer overloaded with edged slabs.

The edged slabs are now being stacked on blocks on the ground behind the sawmill.

There are 23 Pine logs that have started arriving.  I have not measured but some of them looked easily in the 26"+ class.

Boy, if I had some of that ERC logs here I could make a lot of $$$$$ in NH with it. :)

I have been trying to get some WEC from the northern part of NH with not much luck. But I'm NOT going to give up. :D

DanG MM, now that is some sawing there. You going to need a break soon along with time to service your mill.

I caught myself looking at new mills and what I got in the mail yesterday? News letter for a showing from Woodmizer. :D  Do I dare go? :D

Weekend_Sawyer

I have been sawing using my friends LT35, what a nice mill! I milled my first White Ash. They are all dead in our little holler in WV. I barberchaird one pretty bad but still got some nice lumber.

Actually I did have a minor breakdown yesterday.  Middle of the morning I "forgot" to clamp a log, cant, of flitch tight enough a couple of times.  Wow, what?  A little checking and I found that what I thought was a "forgot" was actually the log clamp backing off.  Most of the times I could make the cut, but if there was any delay between clamping and sawing bad things started happening.   :-\

I jerked the hydraulic cylinder off and ate my lunch on the way to the shop.  Long story short, I had a freshly rebuilt cylinder and was back to sawing in less than two hours.   :)

feel your pain MM, yesterday put new blade on was hurrying as always. When I put idle side shield on I missed the little stop on bottom left of housing. When I engaged blade there was a heck of a racket and sparks flying. A real quick shut down. I tried sawing the slab off but blade was toast.  $22 down the drain.

Good looking log. First time I ran into the term barberchair as it relates to logging was on the FF while reading old threads. Had to look it up. Ouch!

It looks like that foot is resting mostly on the center rib of that concrete block. Concrete is great in compression, but if it is what it looks like, that one is being subjected to tension as well. Might want to put a wood pad between the foot and that block to spread the load across the whole top.

That board looks like it has a pink waterfall in it!
