It was pouring today after church, but I took advantage of my sawmill shelter and milled up two big poplar logs into 1x12's.  My wife got a short video of me in action, that I will post as soon as I figure out how.

Finally got it!

I traveled the 230 miles this afternoon and am now set up at the sawing site.

He considered these scattered logs all culls.  We will see tomorrow morning but I see some 4X6's.   ;D

There are some mighty fine logs there.  The cut list will be various timbers, posts, and beams along with 1X12's.

There will be two tailgunners and a Bobcat e/w forks for support.   :)

NCSawyer,

Nice video. Thanks for posting. Question - why don't you raise the loading arms about half way and toss your flitches for edging on them? Also someprotection if the log should roll back for some reason.

Lynn,

Awful good looking culls if you ask me. Stay safe and have a good time out there. I've watched witnery mix with snow, rain and sleet falling in 3-4 inches of snow all day and am envious of you job site and weather.

WV, sometimes I do leave the loading arms up and slide my flitches over on them, especially if they are heavy 2 inch flitches.  But most of the time I leave them down, mostly because I don't like to walk around them and today I needed to grade the flitches according to size.

Lynn,

That is a pile of logs!  I do see a lot of what looks like sand.  I hope they keep the logs good and clean.  Nothing eats up a blade worse than sand.

Yes I know and yes it is sand.  They have not been skidded but I am still glad that I have my Stihl power blower.

Tried my hand at "gunbarreling" a small red oak so I could practice member Yellow Hammer's RRQS technique last week. I figured I'd try using a small log so if it didn't turn out good I could us it for feed for the Heatmor OWB.

Nothing....Yet    :'(

I'm fairly new to the forum just been doing some reading.  I just finished all 416 pages of this thread today (took several days to read it).

I do not have a mill yet but will have one in the future.  I currently live in VA and am moving back to where I grew up in VT.  We will be building our house there on Lake Champlain.

So in the mean time I will be lurking and reading, learning as much as I can without putting my hands on a mill and enjoying all the beautiful wood that is posted.

Just thought I would say Hi. Feels like I should at least introduce myself because it seems like I know some of you pretty well just by reading three years worth of post.

YellowHammer

Slaghuter, welcome.

DTB, that's a fine job of gunbarrelmg.
YellowHammerisms:

Take steps to save steps.

If it won't roll, its not a log; it's still a tree.  Sawmills cut logs, not trees.

A few weeks ago I did some more milling for a customer who comes up with some interesting pieces to cut that he in turn makes some neat stuff out of. This last time he had a chunk of black walnut that had silver maple grafted onto it.

Then this last week I milked some hazelnut "logs" for another guy, he said they were about 60 years old.

Maple and walnut grafted together?  I doubt it, but would have to hear from the experts.  I looks like sap wood to me, not maple.  Gary

Some time ago, I visited a pile of white pine logs in NH that they wanted me to saw up into boards.

Due to the location of the pile there was no area for me to set up the mill beside the biggest part of the pile.
I suggested that they move it to the top of the driveway through that gate you can see to a nice large open field, and stack them on the right hand side where they would be up hill from the mill. That would make it easier to roll them down to the mill.

Friday, I visited the pile again and they put them on the left side of the field. And it is some what flat but it maybe a little down hill from where I'll set up the mill:

I'm not sure what they want me to do with those short ones. I guess I'll saw them up but hopefully to make blocking to stack the lumber on.
That's a whack for sure.

Jim,

In situations like that about all you can do is just run your mill into the middle of the biggest pile and saw your way out. :D

It amazes me the way the logs are arranged when I get there many times. That's why I often go do a site survey before I ever move the saw. Sometimes the people listen, sometimes they don't. We always make it work in the end. Stay warm and be careful out there.

On jobs like this, I "REQUIRE" a piece of equipment to get logs to the mill.  If they can't provide one, I provide mine.  It makes my job a lot easier.

He does have a small tractor with a front bucket in the yard, not pictured.
Hopefully he'll be able to roll some logs with it.

Kinda thought the guy I was working for fell into that "expert" category.

Today I cut what I believe to be red maple, but I'm not sure.  I thought it was going to be questionable because of a rotten knot hole, but it was pure gold inside.  This is why I have a mill.

Talking about "equipment" to move logs, slabs, and timbers around, I was well blessed today.  Trackhoe, skidsteer, and three men.

Bringing my first log this morning.

I am sawing the first log while the trackhoe is staging more logs.

My largest log today.  20' with a 22" top end and 28" butt.  I also had never sawn this species before.

The bright yellow tells me that this was Black Oak.

The skidsteer removing another timber while the trackhoe is busy in the background.

My customer, wife, and pup.

There was some lost time getting everything squared away this morning which is normal but I still managed to saw 1965 bf. with 1½ blades.  I  should have been able to saw that with one blade but as you can see, there is sand.   :-\

I was interrupted three times by folks wanting me to saw their logs.   ::)
