Was a rainy day here today. I noticed this late yesterday when I put the tarp over the mill for the night:

I hate when that happens, especially when I just changed that "fuse".....

What to do now?

In stall another one, (which I believe costs $46) or a 49 cent part?

What would you do?

Jim Rogers

I'm going to follow the recommendation to lift the log loader feet up at the end of the day. And I'm going to clean up the yard so that the water runs off and not create a puddle again.

Whatever you do, have fun doing it!

Shoot, Magic Man, if we didn't here it would turn the mill over on top of the loader before pulling the loader arms free.

Oh no!  My mind is imagining what that would look like.   :o

It would not look pretty and those busted velocity fuses are not pretty either. Leaves the poor mill sitting in a pool of its own blood. (atf) :(

Jim,

That loader arm trick is something I learned here and started doing last year. During winter months (any time it could freeze) I make sure to leave the loader arms up every night at the end of the job.

Recently I loaded up and hooked up for a mobile job and the feet were all frozen to the ground and I had to chip them free. I wish I could find some reasonable way to leave all 6 of the feet up when I'm not sawing. ;D My son said he went to move his JD tractor a few weeks ago and turned the front wheel and broke the seal between the tire and wheel and ended up with a flat tire. He had not noticed his tire was frozen to the ground. I added some more sawdust/dirt to my tractor shed floor yesterday to help divert the water which was freezing my wheels to the ground too.

Y'all can keep that cold weather. Been having some very nice spring weather down south hitting the low 80's. ;D

So what does a velocity fuse actually do?   The name makes me think of "flux capacitor" from that movie Back to the Future. :D

I may need to know as it is possible I may or may not have broken one >:(

My well meaning helper put a block behind the left tire thinking it would keep the sawmill from rolling.   The log loader arm came down in it. So yes I broke my new sawmill >:(

Paul,

What kind of wood does your customer use and does he have any tricks to keep the cookies from cracking?

His trick is FRESH. No guarantee against cracks. Mostly  he delivers than within a week of cutting and recommends to leave them stacked so they do not dry much til using. High end weddings figure them to be a 1 time use product.

Now that my friend is what it is all about because logs are just logs.  It's what is inside that counts, and whether it is yours or a customer's, we get to see it first.

More red oak today. Some left over round edge slabs off a large some what curved log.

By going to the trailer and measuring the pieces needed I know when I can get one out of a piece of short stuff.
Here is a piece that was cut off the big log as I was trimming it down to plank widths.
And it was long enough to make a piece to go on the trailer back bevel area. So instead of throwing it away, I cut it to width and then length and made a usable piece.
I do this a lot and get many short pieces out of a log.

I set another piece the same size on top to show you that it can be done and it will make a piece that they can use. This one is painted "gold" on the end. And I trimmed it to 6' long.
The drawing shows it only has to be 57 1/2" so he's got plenty to work with when trimming it to fit in place.

My son was home this weekend and wanted to see the sawmill operate.  So we tried some ERC logs (toothpicks really) that I had on hand.  That was good for practice.  Then we retrieved one of the oak logs I've been saving.

Looks good plus healthy Oak smells good.

My first sawing job today will be Pecan.  smiley_devil  The next one will be whatever the last storm blew down.  I think various Oaks, Pine, and of course an ERC.

It was too wet to get the sawmill to the 2nd job but sawing the little Pecan log went very well.

Just one short ~6' log.
