Had a few minutes this evening and went down to the mill.
Just in case you don't recognize  this wood, it's social Cottonwood.. You can tell it by its wave as you saw..... :)

I just learned that what I sawed yesterday was very social white oak!

No pictures - my camera is still in repair in IL. I went to a sawing job 32 miles away today and sawed 1762 bf of 7/8" white pine for a customer who met me at a Flea Market showing 14 months ago. In that case I took my mill to the local flea market and showed it off. I did not saw anything that trip but did another trip with sawing a couple of months ago. At lest for me the flea market has proven good advertising. It is common to get such calls months to years after people met me there.

I'd say 75% of what I sawed today was 10" wide.

My helper noticed a loose wheel on my mill and tightened the axle nut for me at the end of the job. He was a great off bearer all day too. The log/boards were all 6' long and the customer nails them up along his fence to make a windbreak for his cows. He leaves about a 1" gap between each board so the wind doesn't blow down his fences. He says the cows really like it.

Quotemy camera is still in repair in IL.

Curious, what kind/type camera can be repaired? Sending it back to the factory?  Just wondering, not interested in the make.

It is a little Canon digital point and shoot. I called a couple of camera stores and asked if they repaired such and got a referral to these folks. I sent it to them, they did a free estimate and sent me a repair cost and I agreed and paid. It should be back in 1-3 weeks per their estimate. I will see how the repair work looks and how it works but I am well pleased with the repair shops process so far.

That's good to hear.  In this throw away world what were they able to service?  Must be a talented shop.

Had a job today sawing a bunch of marginal logs for a local customer. I was charging by the hour so it was ok. He was happy with what he ended up with so that's what matters.

Just finished a quick morning job. Slabbed 2 red oak logs for a repeat customer. I dropped off the mill last night on my way back from yesterdays job and when I arrived this morning the customer had already put the jacks down and had the mill leveled so that was nice!

Finished up the urban salvage mission today and got the mill out and back under cover before the expected weekend rain. Left the chunky life edge slabs with Tony the homeowner, and had a short chat with his wife as I was leaving. She has decided that he needs to make 4 tables for each their (now mostly adult) children, because it would be cool to have one from a tree they grew up playing under. So along with the slabs I've left a selection of good 4x4, 4x2, 6x2 etc. Stuff you can make table bases or legs with. He seems a pretty handy guy.

I hauled home a nice stack of mostly clear cypress, make nice furniture, so I'm happy with the overall deal, and it sure beats the whole tree being lopped up for firewood.  Tony still has a small Mt of firewood to process.  :D

Monterrey Cypress is native to the US (California), but doesn't seem common or milled often there. I'm not even sure what wood it would compare to? Locally it's very much like Kauri Pine (Agathis species), but that's not much use if you have never seen that.  It does have an entry in the wood database, where they say it can grow up to 1m DBH.   :D  The tree I've been working under is at least 3m diameter.  :o

This what I'm NOT sawing.  :D

Hard to judge the trees in the background of the other milling pics. But this is the larger one, with a 28" bar chainsaw for scale.

My estimate is the tree would have been planted maybe 100 years ago as shelter trees on a farm beside the local river. It's now one of 3 in Tony's backyard  :o  He does have a large backyard by NZ standards.

The one we milled (some upper branches only) was growing in the town reserve 6ft over his fence. One of the other ones there is a huge multi-leader monster maybe 12ft across?

What kind of tree is that? It must be a fast growing species to be that big in 100 yrs. I bet it's a lot older...

Sawing as big of posts as I can get out of red oak logs.  Most are 10" X 10" and 10' plus long.  The guy didn't want any side lumber from his logs but wanted the slabs for firewood.  My plan was to drag back the heavy slabs and flip the posts off the mill onto the forklift arms.  It was going great until I broke a link in the feed chain.  It will only take a repair link to get going again but it was a PITA getting the feed chain threaded back through the frame.  Took a couple of hours and I didn't get the job completed. :'(

This is my first problem with the feed chain since the mill was new 12 years ago.  I've really abused it dragging back way more than I should.  Wonder if its time to replace the chains.

That is a matter of how much do you value your time vs the cost of a new chain and installing it.

Camera is still in the shop but should be home soon. No pictures till then. I went to a repeat customer 26 miles away today and first re-sawed some poplar beams we cut several years ago into 6/4 boards for a customer who wants to make them into shiplap. Seeing how they cracked and split I can see why so many experienced member recommend against sawing logs into cants for storage.

After that we sawed a bunch of mostly small, older poplar logs into 5/4 boards. We will resume that in  the morning then saw some 5/4 X 6" Red Oak fence boards. We did not do a tally today but I'm thinking we cut about 1700 bf.

I went back for four hours this morning and sawed a few walnut then several red oak logs all into 5/4 lumber. I like sawing 5/4! It builds up faster and I don't have that anal pucker factor when I make that last cut on a thin dog board. When we tallied we had cut 3250 bf yesterday and this morning. It sure is nice to have good help who keeps the boards moving and a log on the loading arms so I don't have to wait for the next one.

I brought the mill home and got everything put away till the next time.

Cut these a few days ago. Sawed easily, open tylosses, diffuse porus, bark had deep furrows.
