Magic, earlier in the year when the pond was shallower, the butt end of that log was visible and from the distance we assumed it was pecky.  We have sawn some nice pecky logs that we got with this bunch.  The ones we sawed were not as pecky as yours.  Those you sawed look like they spent a good while submerged.

I asked a couple of foresters and rangers at the district FFA forestry contest last week if they knew of anyone locally who is cutting cypress.  No leads from them.

I recently got a call from a guy in Mobile, AL , wanting to buy only pecky Cypress.  I wished him luck.

I did saw a large Cypress job this Summer that had a majority of pecky, probably 75%.  Still, duplicating that would be a stretch especially since you can't tell that it is pecky in tree form.

Yes, that pecky log/lumber that I pictured above was a sinker and I have no idea what the customer did with that lumber.

John and I had one repeat customer scheduled to show up around noon so this morning we cleaned up a bit and took a ride in the JD Gator to the end of the road where a neighbor has some land.  There are a few dead pines that still have the needles attached so they should be worth sawing.  We may get them tomorrow.

While waiting on the customer to bring us a few of his water oak limbs (logs) to saw, we sawed a few short but decent cedar logs a tree guy dropped off a few weeks ago.  Based on the punk on the center of the logs, we were not really expecting too much as far as the quality of the slabs, but they turned out really good.  They are about 75-80 inches, but they should still sell.  We have been sawing at least one mantle each time we saw slabs.  These are 20-24" wide.  They dry slow and sell slow, but they do sell and generally for a $GU or more (the mantles).

We had a SW wind today, which meant I was getting blasted in the face with cedar sawdust while sawing.  More cedar in the morning but not as wide.

Man, those are beauties! I would (almost) kill to get a couple of pieces like that. Maybe you will still have some left when the next sawing project rolls around?

Tom, I hope they are gone by then, but we usually have some cedar on hand.  It is hit or miss for us on the cedar.  We'll go for a while and not have any good cedar logs and then we'll end up with some.  The ones we will saw tomorrow came from a repeat customer/former student.  I let him borrow my trailer to go to Ocala to get some cedar logs, we sawed half for him, and we kept the rest.  I'm particular who I loan stuff to, but this young man is dependable (also a firefighter).

It is caused by a fungus "polyporus amarus" while the tree is alive.  Once the tree is felled, the fungus dies and the fungal attack which causes the long hollow burrows stop.

And all these years I thought it was from storing pecker poles in the same water with the cypress. Who knew?

I never realized how much rain we had coming or I would have already moved the sawmill to Monday's sawing site.  It's gonna be mushy plus there is more water forecast for Wednesday.  ::)

This sawing is for a repeat customer that I sawed over 21Mbf for back in April.

John and I sawed a bit more cedar today.  Most of this died after Irma, five years ago.

The dirt area had several cedar trees that died after Irma that I did not push until last week.

Yup, short sleeve T shirts and long pants.  ::)

The temp did hit 73° today but it's forecast to drop to 34° tomorrow night.  78° forecast for next week and then dropping again which is typical for us.  Our weather is controlled by the Gulf of Mexico so it's always changing.

I only worked this morning due to the severe weather possibilities as two weather systems collide over us during the next 12 hours.

Well today at the mill in addition to wool blend socks and my double front logger jeans I was wearing a T-shirt, a long sleeve Carhart undershirt over that, a long sleeve hickory shirt over that, a hoody over that, and a 3 season jacket, plus a stocking cap under my ear muffs. Oh, I I put the wool liners in my gauntlet work gloves. But it wasn't really cold today, just in the 30's.
Working it that heat has to be rough. ;D

Not scientific but the ones that have survived long enough to make it to that point will give me trouble with the advancer not having enough clearance to push them ahead without fetching up on the setter.  When that happens I know it's their last go around.
