I needed to vacuum the condensing fins on our icemaker so simply remove 4 screws to remove the cover, vacuum, and reinstall the cover.  OK, I replaced the cover and reinstalled two screws, but the other two had vanished, gone, departed, disappeared, nowhere to be found.  I searched under the icemaker, clothes washer, drier but no luck.

I hate to tell you, but that's not something you invented. It's happened to me a few times and I don't think I invented it either. ffcheesy :wink_2: It is humbling and maybe even demoralizing when you finally fined them, depending on how long you looked around and were SURE you had laid the 'right over here!'.

Chalk lines do the same to me.  Except they disappear and only reappear when the replacement shows up.

Seems that knife sharpeners have taken up the chalk line habits.  I now have three varieties in the house, two in the boat, two in the camper and I don't know how many in the shop.

Sometimes the missing rogue item takes an extended period to show up.  That's not so frustrating.  Last week I bought a new sharpener, the missing one was found less than an hour later.  That IS frustrating because I was too far from the store to make returning the new one make sense.

Similar with chalk lines and knife sharpeners...

They are always found in the last place I look...most times hiding exactly where they tend to collect.

Of course they are hiding in the last place you look.  Do you continue to look for them after you found them?

Several years ago we had a similar thing happen here.  I was helping my FIL sharpen a few blades on his Wood-Mizer drag-style sharpener, when he went to put the little magnet on the back side of the second blade, the magnet was nowhere to be found, so we had to sharpen the rest without it!

About a week later I was helping him organize/clean the sharpening area.  I went across the garage to get the shovel to scrape the floor.  When I picked up the shovel, I noticed the little orange magnet stuck to the face of it!

That little magnet was dropped and then rolled 20 some feet to the other side of the garage and found a place to stay for a while.

We found the lost magnet about 4 days after we received a new one from Wood-Mizer!  Then we had a spare!

I like to use magnetic parts trays for these kinds of projects. I have learned through experience to turn the tray over when parts are missing.

The magnet on the flashlight can be handy, or it can be hiding something.  ffcool ffcool

    I Win!!!

Unless somebody gets stitches, loses some body parts or has an extended stay in the hospital I think I have this category sewed up for the year.

This afternoon I loaded my old road warrior Kawasaki on my 5X8 trailer to take to the shop. I backed up and put the hitch on the ball, rotated the landing gear 90 degrees, and pulled the trailer a couple hundred yards to my house then went inside, changed out of my muddy clothes and my wife and I took off for the shop 30 miles away. After about 17 miles I realized I did not remember plugging in the trailer lights so I pulled over in front of a small elementary school to check. I was right. I had not plugged in the lights. I also had not hooked up the 2 safety chains and for good measure I had not inserted the clip I use for a latch pin. I looked and miracle of miracles, the pin was still sitting on the spare tire at the front of the trailer and had not blown off.

BTW - did I mention I had forgotten to fasten the latch? :uhoh: :uhoh: :uhoh: :uhoh:

The only thing holding the trailer and ATV on the ball for speeds up to 50-55 mph was gravity but it had ridden that far with no incident.

Your a lucky man Howard. ffcheesy

My trailer fun today was checking the air pressure on both the tires. One was down a few pounds, so I turned on the air compressor and grabbed the air hose with the inflator chuck. I put the chuck on the valve stem, held it there a few seconds, and checked pressure. What! Did it go down? Repeated and checked again, yes the pressure went DOWN, now even more! :uhoh:
Come to find a split in the hose from the bitter cold that was leaking air pressure as fast as the compressor could make it. Just putting the chuck on the stem was actually bleeding pressure off. ffcheesy

Howard, If you didn't drag the chains and/or electric plug for 17 miles, you should buy several tickets. At least you had plenty of tongue weight!

I know of one that was similar, the difference being that the hitch was not even latched:

The other difference was that it was not a trailer, but the guy's Sawmill.  Five miles later it detached and ran off of the highway where the hitch dug into the ground and stopped it.

Looks like he also has an Operator's Seat with an Umbrella attached.  :shocked2:   fiddle-smiley

Lynn,

You did not read the rest of the story!

The hooks and electric cable were hanging on the tongue. That is why they weren't dragging. The amazing thing was I did not even lose the safety clip I had laid on the spare tire hanging on the front of trailer. T

Everybody gets lucky once. :wink_2:
Years ago we had a large wildland fire in our county that we worked for 2 weeks, it got ugly and all the departments for 3 counties around, plus the state was rotating in personnel on a daily basis.  My department had sent down a full hand crew one day and I could not make it, but I 2was available the next day when nobody else was. So I got to the firehouse at 5am and hooked up the trailer with our 6 wheel ATV on it. I had a heck of a time snaking it out of the back of the bay alone as we had it snuck in there. I had to hitch and unhitch it a couple of times and do some hand pushing. I finally got it out on the ramp and hooked up, now running a little late.
As is my habit, about ten miles down the road I pulled off to check the hitch and load. I had put the chains on, but not the light plug and the coupling was not locked either. I got lucky. It's bad enough when the trailer is your own, but when it belongs to the community, that's a whole different deal.
I'd like to say the rest of the day went easy, but that was a heck of a fire and very dangerous. I nearly rolled that ATV with about 300 pounds of hose in the bed. I found myself holding it up with one leg for 'a while' while I tried to figure out how to save myself from getting crushed. NOBODY else around within a half mile. It was and interesting little eternity I suffered there until I settled in on a Hail Mary decision that for some reason worked. Until right now, nobody else ever knew about my hitching error or my near rollover. Let's just keep that on the down low, OK? Not my finest day, for sure.
