Learner, is that walnut? It looks fairly light in color. Maybe a regional variation?

That's Black Walnut dropped and delivered yesterday.  You can't get much greener than that.  It hasn't had time to darken.  ;D  That's why I'm just tickled pink to have it!

The one we just cut was pretty dark when we felled it. It was perfectly healthy.

Depends on where they grow boys. I've seen extremely light colored walnut that grew less than a mile from some really dark walnut.

:D I was just going to say that maybe they grow differently here.  I've got some drying now that was actually black on the ends of the logs when I cut them.  I have one more of that delivery to cut.  I'll post a pic of it tomorrow.  Of course it's been sitting awhile so.  I'd have to ask Ronnie how long.

I drooled over this one for a bit today.

A 35" butt SYP log, and I was anxious to crack it open.

And all that I found inside was 48 2X6's and a few 2X4's.....$$$$   ;D

I could never match his talent for 2X6's and 2X4's! I will never try.

All I could get out of SYP (Virginia Pine strain) was live-edge lapsiding today. This picture is showing the angle of the cant.

It was my first lapsiding cant, and I learned a few things.

Also seen in the picture is our Mech Angel, appearing in a puff of smoke, as usual.  ;D

Here are a couple boards from a nice oily sinker cypress log, still trying to find the whole log pictures, these boards came from the double hearted log in my avatar.. The cypressene oil in some logs varies, this log was very heavy due to the high oil concentrations, and it has a wonderful smell to it as well.

walnut crotch vs honeylocust.  this was back in my chainsaw milling days, i was experimenting using regular (non milling) chain.  it cut a little rough!   :D

I HAD 4 erc 1 inch thick boards that were 16 in wide, 7 foot long,  cant find the photo  :-[.
They were full of random brown rot but looked like magic's pecky cypress.

Q: what causes the effect of the "pecky"  is it a fungus too?

To quote a famous person here on the FF;  My definition of pecky is "decoratively rotten".
