Or exactly how hungry did that first oyster eater have to be?

how ironic, the real invader was small pox.

As NZ has no native land mammals seafood and shellfish was a big thing for original polynesian Maori. They would harvest Paua (Abalone), Kina (a spikey sea urchin), various clams (pipi and toheroa) and kutai (mussels). Inland was tuna (eels) and koura (crawfish). Regular fish and birds where on the menu as well of course.
Collectively they are called kaimoana. Kai (food) and Moana (Ocean).
Like WDH says, archeologists are able to trace the history of old coastal villages by the piles of shells they created.

Well, it was my turn today.  I went to town to buy a bunch of supplies for building my kiln shed.  I had 12 sheets of osb and about 70 2x4s on my trailer.  That stuff is so slippery against each other.  I made the turn onto the road that goes to my house and noticed a 2x4 in the mirror as I rounded a turn.  I pulled over to tie it down better and someone pulled in behind me to let me know that a bunch came off my trailer in the middle of the intersection.  Of course it took a while to get turned around on a little side street with my big trailer.  I called 911 to get the police to go make sure no one had an accident.  I was still on the phone with 911 when I got back to the intersection.  To my relief a state highway truck had come along and dragged it all to the side.  11 sheets of osb and a dozen 2x4s to be exact.  No damage to any of it.  I had that stuff tied down tight, but starting on that hill just was too much.  I got it all back loaded with the help of the highway worker and super strapped down and finally headed home.  As punishment for my stupidity I got stuck behind another highway truck spraying roadside weeds.  17 mph all the way home for 9 miles.

I ain't saying nuthin but don't feel special :D
The funniest one of those I saw was a flatbed delivery truck loaded with 12' sheetrock and apparently very loosely strapped. He crossed a railroad grade and I saw the load go up, the truck continue forward and then the load slammed back down on the bed. About 2' of the entire stack snapped off and dropped to the road. The driver was oblivious. To have been a fly on the wall when he got to where he was going :D.

That is why the local hardware store will not help secure a load, they don't want the liability. OSB is miserable stuff at the best of times.

When I was unloading the trailer at home I stepped on the pile and took a ride.  Twisted my back trying to not fall.

As much as I'd like to be using more from my mill to build this, 2x4s are so easy to buy.  Plus, I buy from a little family owned lumber yard.  They all know my name in there and I buy on account.  My dad worked there over 50 years ago.

I started sawing yesterday and my lube mizer had nothing coming out of it.  I had cleaned out the 3psi check valve day before, so was looking forward to first rate operation.

I figured the pump was empty and maybe blew a fuse.

So told customer might be a few minutes while I figured it out.

Checked that the inline filter was full.  Tried to run again not working.  Checked fuses in fuse box.  Lost one somewhere in there and got another one from truck.  Still no go.

Starting to worry, was cutting dry cedar poles and lube is helpful keeping blade cool so didnt want to wing it.

Then I turned on the Lubemizer on my console.  This made a huge difference and fixed the problem.  Maybe only 5 minutes down, customer was impressed how well I knew my machine.  ::) ::) ::)

I have only hit my log stops once.  you can see the line on it from years ago.  this time I only polished it on top.

You have to be good to just polish the top.  8)

I polished the top of one of my clamps just like that.  Trouble was it did just as much damage to the blade as cutting into it.

i stopped and backed out.  i sure was not going to hit the next three log stops set at the same ht. and I assume i lost the set that was oriented down and the blade was sure to start going up.

I went and picked up a few cedar logs from a friend this morning after work.  I got the logs on the trailer with no problem, but when I tried to move one forward my feet slipped on the wet trailer(it's raining) and my face went right into the log.  I hit the log hard and was seeing stars for a moment.  The bridge of my nose has a small laceration and a few other scratches.  That was not fun.  Of course I had to strap the logs down with blood dripping from my nose.  Drove home wiping blood off my nose with a napkin.  Wife had to leave for work, but she put a couple steri strips on me before she left.

at least you did not break your glasses.  I am sure the log is ok, and if ERC should blend in fine (blood) .  glad you were not seriously hurt (life threatening).  I know that hurts.  if I stumble going up stairs I get a slight sense or smell of blood.  prob. PTSD from the times I did stuff like that.   :D
