If you hit yourself and get cut above the eyebrows, you will get LOTS of blood. It's even more fun when it gets in your eyes and your on top of an unfinished roof can't see trying to climb down. (I learned this years ago). :-X

Yeah Resonator, you are right. Lots of blood vessels up there without much space between the skin and the skull. It's even worse when it's really cold and that blood is pumping up there to keep the head warm.
I was camping a long time ago in February and it was cold, about 5 degrees. One of the men in the group was hand splitting firewood with a hand ax. One of the splits exploded (frozen wood) and a flinch caught him in the forehead. He bled like a pig hung on the pole. Blood was running down his face and splitting the stream over his nose before running around his mouth and filling his beard and spilling on the snow. He started laughing when he saw all of us looking at him horrified and running for first aid gear. It was only a 1 inch clean slice, but man did he bleed! Someplace I have a photo with that blood running down his face in a river. His only complaint was that it got in his eyes and mixed with the tears he developed from laughing so hard, it was hard for him to see and enjoy the sight of us in a panic. I have never seen a man laugh so hard while bleeding so profusely.
I guess you had to be there.

Yikes, that's a good one caveman! Did I understand correctly that you had in-home stitches? I've gotten stitches a bunch of times and feel confident enough that I could do them at home too, should the need arise.

Maybe the doctors in the house can tell me why that's a terrible idea, other than pain and infection? It took me a while to pay off the last ones received.

I stitched my own knee, and my son put staples in his leg under my guidance.  forehead is tough.  trying to sew in the mirror can be tough.  I could not have done the bottom of my foot as it is hard to get to and the combo of pain and ticklish made it hard enough for someone else to numb.  either arm would be tough due to needed two hands to do a good job.  glue and steri. strips are easier.  if you care what your forehead looks like, it is best to do a deep layer and a skin layer.  it keeps the tension off the skin sutures and prevent a deep groove from developing when the tissue under the skin retracts.  It aint rocket science, but drugs and two hands are helpful.

Doc,

That reminds me of the old joke about the guy who came home drunk, fell on the front steps and broke the pint bottle in his back pocket and cut his hinder parts. He sneaked into the house and patched himself up and sneaked in the bed without waking his wife.

A few hours later he woke up to his wife screaming "You've been drinking again!" He confessed then asked how she knew. She pointed at the bathroom and he went in and found the bathroom mirror bandaged with medical tape. ::)

I've never put my own in but have taken mine out before, I had a bunch in my upper forehead from a broken/ flying cutoff wheel in a hand grinder. I would move the stitches back and forth a couple times a day so when I pulled them out they came out easy, just clip them off and slowly pull the thread through.... almost painless.

My Father use to tell the story about his father, (a Minnesota farmer.)  Putting up barb wire and cut a 90 degree flap of skin on his cheek.  Dad said he watched him stand in from of a mirror and stitch up his face.  This would have been in the late 20's.

In the picture it looks like my forehead got split.  The cut was actually up higher on my head, which is covered by hair.  Had the neighbor not stitched it, I'd shaved a spot and applied a few butterfly bandages and superglue.  That spot on my forehead is just a wrinkle.

My dreams of a modeling or acting career ended years ago, probably when I was 12 and lost a fly ball in the sun.  I had a hole above my chin that got stitched inside and out.  The doc that stitched that one must have been named Igor. It was a few years before I could hide that one with facial hair.

I was crouched down moving to pull a 4x4 out of a stack while the lift or two above was supported with the tractor's forks.  The fork I bumped into was above my hat bill/line of sight.  I had enough momentum going when I hit it that I fell backward, rolled and popped back up.  The DanG thing is about healed now.  I'll get someone to pull the stitches out next weekend after I get home from Oklahoma (FFA National Land and Homesite).

Almost had a major entry for this page. The last couple time pulling my flatbed trailer out of my driveway, the jack dragged. I thought it was odd, but figured the ground had settled. The other day I had the excavator on and the jack dragged as it had been doing. I had a Dr. Appointment before the digging job, so I had a nice flat parking lot to look things over. At first , I thought the tongue needed to be adjusted to raise the jack. But then the thought went through my head, what's changed? It didn't used to drag, but now it does. So, crawled under the truck with a flashlight. I didn't need a flashlight to see the problem. The trailer hitch receiver was cracked! I was able to weld a patch on it to get by until the new one was delivered. I don't scare easily, but that one made me pucker. Had it broken off clean, it would have had nothing to stop it. The safety chains are connected to the receiver and so is the breakaway safety cable. The new receiver just showed up, so I guess I know what this weekend has in store.

And that is the reason the safety chains and cable should be attached to the tow vehicle frame, not the receiver. ::) That could have got ugly in a hurry!

Crusarius

I wish they would actually design mounts like that into vehicles so you could have the chains and hitch on different parts. That is something the NHTSA should actually be a part of. along with corrosion resistant fuel and brake lines.

My dumb move for the day was after a week on the road and our last night in Charlotte NC to see the daughter and her family I went ahead and got a hotel room near I-77 convenient for tomorrow's departure. I picked the Day's Inn right behind the Azteca Restaurant. Apparently the Azteca is a popular fairly upscale Mexican Restaurant. I did not think about today being the5th of May - Cinco de Mayo. ::) We got back to our room and had to park slam back at the north 40 as the restaurant have taken up all the parking near the front where our room is. Now I wonder how rowdy the crowd will be all night. ???

Note to self - do not check into a hotel by a Mexican restaurant on 5/5.

Yes, that could have been all bad. I may end up figuring out a way to connect the chains separately going forward.

Broke the pull cord on my Stihl MS180C, easy fix right? Went to put the new cord on the pulley, and the recoil spring inside the cover decided to uncoil into an angry twisted slinky...  ::)
