Ted,

I did not know about the Hercules but I think I read according to the scientists a bumblebee should not be able to fly either.

QuoteSpruce Goose was made of birch.
Looked it up, interestingly it was actually made of plywood. According to what I read, the veneers were made in a factory an hour away from me in Marshfield WI.  :P

The Spruce Goose was built using birch in a process called Duramold.  While some poplar was used, birch and birch plywood were combined with phenolic resin and pressed under heat in the molds.

The H-4 was a fabric over wood (Duramold) construction because while it was designed and built during WWII aluminum was reserved for the war.

The plane was intended to be a transport for WWII but wasn't completed until 1947.  It flew one low level flight.

Anyway, Howard's (ours, not Hughes) comment about the Titanic made me think of the "un-flyable"  Spruce Goose.   :D

Talk about a thread taking a "bird walk"  :D

There was some interesting experimenting going on back then, I'm not sure why stuff dropped away or if it is worth dipping back and re-looking, much was done at the Forest Products Labs. There was Impreg and Compreg going on, I remember airplane props of high density veneers, I'm sure much more, some neat stuff.

I don't think I would want to fly on a plane with props made out of snow Don.  :D

Well I read this thread sometimes and laugh along with you guys but it is rude not to share with the class.

Was winching a log grapple and some other good stuff out of a guy's junk pile onto my double axle abuse trailer after dark the other night. Went to move the little 4500lb winch mounted on a pintle hitch receiver plate from one side of the trailer to a pocket on the other side. When I got over there I was moving a little too fast and stepped onto the forward trailer tire (the fenders are, uhm, missing). Tire wasn't on the ground! Did not get hurt -- stayed mostly upright but wife says I am not ready for a log drive in the river just yet... The bearings are pretty smooth ;D

My niece asked for some wood to give to her boyfriend as a Christmas present.  I found some walnut and a little red oak in the kiln that I thought he might like.  There was a live edge slab piece that I thought he might use as a little table top.  It had a warped end so I went to cut it off with a circ saw before I sent it thru the planer.  I've had cuts close up on the blade before, but this was ridiculous.  It became stuck in there.  I had to take the blade off and put a different blade back on and cut from the other side to free this one.  A little stress in this piece Id say.

Might want to check the MC in the middle of that slab. Walnut is known for water pockets and that closing is textbook case hardening.

Just checked, Moisture is less than 7%.  I think it has to do with the fact that the end I cut off was a big knot that had bowed up in drying.

Just as an update I discovered today that after exactly 4 weeks from breaking my ribs I am finally able to sneeze. ::) Up to this point every sneeze would abort about halfway. I'm not saying it doesn't hurt because it does but being able to sneeze is a big improvement.

This morning my wife handed me her phone and asked if I could help her with an online order she was trying to make.
I had bought her a gift card and she was having trouble entering in the pin number for the card.

It would not work for me at all.
I pressed on "live chat" and when through all the problems with the agent. The more we tried the worst it got.
We (my wife and I) canceled the order and hung up with the agent.

So, I told her to make sure when she goes to Bed, Bath and Beyond that they ok the card before she picks out a bunch of stuff to buy.

She said she'd go to the store in the Mall.
I told her that I didn't get the gift card at the store in the mall.

The store in the mall, was Bath and body works.

That was the store that I was supposed to buy the gift card from. We finally figured out why the gift card wouldn't work.

My error, again.

She can still use the card, just need to buy from a different store than she wanted to go to.

Very simple mistake to make.  Both stores have the word bath in them.  Both stores smell like perfume and I don't like to go in either one.

@firefighter ontheside I laughed at your comment because my wife loves both of the stores and the only difference to me is that one is larger so the smells has more air to work through before they make my nose stuffy!
