You would have really chuckled when I bent over and tried to pick the end of the log back up!  Excavator and chain to the rescue.

I'm might get yelled at for this :D
But I think blue pine with beetle holes
Looks good on walls or ceilings with 3' on lower wall with cap and plaster (real) up to the wood ceiling.
Just me I guess.

I get it both ways depending upon the lumber's intended use.  Sometime I slab deep and the holes go with the slabs.  At other times the customer is wide eyed :o and wants every board to have holes.  I just do what the customer asks.  ;D

I'm missing my mill, it's parked in Oregon and I'm in Idaho prepping the homesite. I did get to fire up the 036 and tip over a couple trees that will end up getting used to close in the pole building that will house the 5th wheel while I build the house.

Busysawyer, your flooding the market with those pretty BW slabs, I'm a little jealous lol

I like your log hauler magic, that's creatively at its best.

Ive never dawn white oak, but have sawn some pin oak. The challenge I have with it, especially if it's been down a while, is the smell. It's been over 10 years since I quit chewing, but the smell of that aged oak smells like Copenhagen.

I have a bunch of walnut stacked up and starting to take over my driveway. So this weekend I decided to cut the biggest offender to shrink my pile back where it belonged. The butt log was 22"x27"x116" long. Unfortunately it had some shake in it so I decided to minimize the losses and cut it 22" wide instead of the other way. Turned out pretty nice. Of course now I have it cut and suddenly I get a $1700 repair bill on my jeep and am wondering what the slabs may be worth.

I think I came up with 12 slabs 2" think and a bunch more at 1"

(the picture does not show the big one)

on another note. I noticed the sawdust from this log was like powder more than dust. Does this mean the blade was dull? I was using a 9 degree double hard from woodmizer. It still cut nice may have been a little more work but hard to tell since this was the first time I ever cut anything like this or this size.

Could be the spieces...down here pine sawdust is coarse, but White Oak sawdust is almost fine as flour

Nice BW there Crusarius.  :)

My today's (and tomorrow) job is more of a salvage/recovery operation.

Beetle killed and also storm felled SYP trees.  All are "bark slipped" which needs to be removed before it hits the sawmill bed.

But this one and it's sister was too far gone and did not get sawed.

We knocked off at noon so my tailgunner (customer's Son) could go to his regular job but not before sawing this...

A 4' Honey Locust butt.

That we sawed into five 9/4 and two 7/4 live edged slabs.

Broke one 7°T blade that tried to escape but the rubber chute caught it.

I won't scale the lumber until we finish tomorrow.  1X6, 1X8, & 1X10's plus the Honey Locust slabs.

Eight SYP plus these six Honey Locust "logs" for tomorrow.

Before leaving the customer treated me with boiled Shrimp, Taters, and you might notice some boiled Peanuts in the top left corner.  :)

:D :D :D That never dawned on me Crossroads but you are right about the smell. The few pin oak logs I've sawn smelled like that or worse. I quit chewing Skoal original fine cut about 7-8 years ago so the Copenhagen smell never got to me.

Dang, I'd almost feel guilty charging them after a meal like that. Although I had a customer jump in his truck and leave me to pull my own boards a while back. He was only gone about 10-15 min. And returned with a pastrami burger. I thought it sounded a little odd, but it was one of those burgers that once you get ahold of it, you don't dare let go till it's gone with stuff running down both arms.

Sawed another half day today for a total of 1377bf sawed.

The customer asked, "what to do with this last snag"?  I said, "throw it up there and we will see what is in it".  We pulled about a dozen 1X4's out of it.

I have a scheduling conflict for the next two days so we will finish Friday.  Nothing left but Honey Locust.

Not sawing yet, just collecting some logs.  Friend needs some random trees cleared from an old fence line so it can be rebuilt. Ugly old pine that's going for firewood. I use the term "old" loosely as it's only got 25 growth rings.

Small but nice looking White Cedar is more like it. Splits into multiple leaders, but I can get a couple of usable logs out of it.

Well I think it's White Cedar, I don't know all these import conifers that well. It's not Port Orford Cedar as it doesn't have the ginger smell.

And what I think is Lusitanica Cypress.

Raining today so I'll do workshop stuff and go fire up the sawmill when it clears up. Hopefully before Christmas.  ::) :D

Try to work early and late to stay cool and especially stay hydrated Jim.

A regular customer just called.  He has always had Red Oak or Walnut but this time he said Ash and Hickory!!  What could he be thinking??  :o

Got two orders for white oak trailer decking.  I had two white oaks ready but in the woods.

I used the tow truck winch to pull them out after they were cut.

I had to use an improvised Magicman chain hook to pull the biggest log onto the mill.

Some logs required a bigger "tool" than your average cant hook.

One order is done, it's too hot to finish the other.
