neat idea.  My cans look like yours with some mold ect.  I may be switching to the metal cans. although some bleach water and a scotch bright pad would clean that up and maybe a little wax.  the nozzle is the big problem. I used to put a valve stem in the butt of a 2 liter pop plastic bottle for a jet boat or rocket model.  could actually pressurize the can and get great flow with the valve in, or let it vent with the valve out.  neat idea.  it looks like a robot puppy! cheers!!

I used to use the rubber valve stems but the gas would eat them up pretty quick. Now I use the metal ones with better success. If you buy them 12 at a time on ebay they are about $1.07 each.

I had the same problem with a pack that I bought from WalMart.  Some of that fine Chinese Rubber.  They fell apart pretty quick.  The ones I use now are from NAPA and seem to be much better quality.  They have been in the can for over a year without issue.

A little shot of Clorox Cleanup and the water hose will clean them right up.  They sit in the shade under my rear deck and tend to get a little funky.  With all of the rain over the last two years the north side of my house looks about the same.  I need to clean that as well.

I have several plastic jugs, and they last pretty well for me, but I keep them in a storage shed, out of the sunlight.  Have several of those plastic flex hoses Doc posted, my local coop has them, and also Menards.

My 4 metal cans from eBay were supposed to arrive on the 10th, but they showed up today.  I will unbox and paint them yellow tomorrow.  ;D

Normally lower the head, put a hose in a hole cut into the top of the lube tank.  One the road, take fuel and lube tank off mill, fill and lift back into place.

Recently had a customer's helper took my red container labeled "GASOLINE" and emptied it into the lube tank while I was on the phone.

Any problems with metal gas cans rusting?  I've thrown out old metal boat gas cans that had a hopeless amount of rust scale inside. I suppose this has to do with them falling into disuse.

Yes, I have seen neglected metal fuel cans rust on the inside and become unusable.  :-\

My 4 new metal cans arrived well boxed and unharmed.

Each one comes with it's own metal spout with a rubber/plastic tip.  The cap and the spout cam lock into the jug.

The cans slept outside last night and the temperature dipped down into the 30's.  I now have them inside warming before I spray 3 of them yellow.

The deed is done, but I was disappointed with my paint of choice.  Krylon rattle can, which was OK, but Plasticolor usually covers better and with fewer "runs, drips, and errors".  I try to avoid Rustoleum because of prior bad experiences with the nozzles.  Took a can of paint per can.

Yellow they are!!  :)   I will fill them before I leave for the "sand box" tomorrow evening.

I just filled da mustard buckets with Diesel.  :)   I got a text from my tailgunner confirming that everything was OK in the sand box so we will be ready to resume sawing tomorrow morning.  I never know how much more we have to saw because I never know when the one-armed trackhoe skidder will show up with another log.....stump and all.  :o

Anyone ever have one of the new style gas cans split from expansion?  Gotta love how you fill them up, drive home, and in the summer by the time I get home they are all ballooned out.  I usually leave them stored with the spout cracked so it will breath and not either blow out or suck in as the temps change.

I read once that yellow is the worst color to get to cover.  And painting over green only makes it worse.  What I do is to give a quick coat of white before applying yellow. Comes out much better and I think I use less paint doing it that way.

Could be John.  I certainly did not remember the one that I painted white being that difficult.  Anyway, these are mustard now, which reminds me that I forgot the mayo and mustard for tomorrow's sammich.  :-\  I am checked in at the hotel and ain't leaving now.  no_no

The pumps @dogbo2013 showed,

Works great for awhile.  For me, after about a year the connection where the hose meets the pump starts leaking and I've had the hose come off.  I think the gas or diesel affects it over time, makes the plastic expand.  The batteries do much better than I ever expected.  They pump quite a few jugs before they need changing.  I'm still using them to fill my mowing tractor and my skid steer and a rented boom forklift.  I wish I could find something of better quality.  Something that used a rechargeable power tool battery would be better - Dewalt?

On my mill I get on a 2ft step ladder and get the jug down and fill it on the ground.  This is a 2014 LT15go so it's pretty high in the air and makes for heavy lifting of the 5 gallon jug.  Thankfully I don't have to do it that often - once a week while I'm milling right now.
Anything someone can design, I can sure figure out how to fix!
If I say it\\\\\\\'s going to take so long, multiply that by at least 3!

Magicman

I was a very disappointed because one of the nozzles would not fit a can today.  Had to get another nozzle and it was tight.  I will try a different can tomorrow and see what is going on.

This is a non-issue for me because I will be pumping instead of pouring, but it is an issue if pouring.  Anyway, I should know tomorrow whether I have a whacko can or nozzle.

Here's my little diesel fuel station. Bought a used food grade 250gal IBC totes that had sunflower oil in it. Mounted the cheapest diesel fuel pump off amazon ($80, https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B071LJKBVD/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1). Thing pumps ultra fast. Put an extra fuel filter inline with it (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009KGAR26/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1) just to keep things safe for all my equipment. The pump has a 10gauge SAE 2 plug connector, and I have another sae connector dangling out the battery box on the LT50. That way the LT50 can power the fuel pump, and the water pump (you can see the other IBC tote I have adjacent for filling the lube bottle), as well as hooking it to a charger/solar panel.

Tote $30, pump $80, filter $40... you'd be hard pressed to finagle a cheaper and as reliable diesel transfer tank for $150.

Pretty neat. But, 1) how do you afford to fill that 275 gallon tank? ;) and 2) how do you fill this tank?  Delivery?

Gasoline must only be dispensed into an approved container, what about diesel?  How fast do you go through this - does it stay fresh (dry)?  Just curious.  I just have one piece of equipment using diesel and I use probably 45 to 60 gallons year so I just 5-gallon-it.

I fill about 200 gallons at a time. Definitely a gut punch of a bill, but saves so much time not filling a 5 gallon can every day. I load it in the back of my f350 with the skid steer and fill it at a gas station. That lasts me about 3-4 months of milling and running my skid steer. This time around I found out the Murphy station was cheaper than the off-road diesel I had been getting, so I filled it with on road diesel. Might go a little quicker if the f350 runs low and needs filling.

Just be careful if you are using the same tank that you have been using for storing off-road diesel because if there are any markers left in the residue and they are found in your truck for highway use I understand it can be a big fine. FWIW.

Yeah, I found out how invasive that dye is. There was probably 5-10 gallons of the red-dye diesel left when I went to refill it. I figured putting 200 gallons of the normal diesel would make the red imperceptible... well, I was wrong about that!

I go through about 100 gallons every 3 to 4 months.  I have a buddy who buys a thousand gallon at a time.  has been as low as 1.19$ a gallon.  I do him favors, like helping with his "Rut Hut" build so he brings fuel to me, or I load it with skid loader and go 1 mile to his house.  Dallas spreads manure for a living.

Fuel truck came yesterday to top things off.  One tractor took almost 200 gallons, then he headed over to the tank.... Starting next week or so he will be here weekly to do the same thing.  FYI - best to fill that IBC tank at night and on a weekend.  If DOT sees you with that having red fuel in the F350 tank will be the least of your worries.
