25 years is the standard to be a "classic", car, so I guess you can say the same for music ???
Here's a NZ one from 1990
Chris Knox - Not Given Lightly - YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NaSV0ymL8jk)
Chris Knox was a local punk rocker back in the day, and his main claim to fame at the time was that he had a 4 track tape recorder, and would record other "alternative" bands, usually in peoples houses. There was no recording budget :D.

Lynyrd Skynyrd was one of the first bands I seriously got into. They have quite a lot of songs that did not make radio, I still come across the odd one I haven’t heard.

My 'Master List' is 450 tunes long. That don't include several playlists posted by others, under a dozen lists, but some of them are long to.
I have a large array of stuff. :D
Stayed up way to late this morning messing around with some friends playing music from his collection of 70's & 80's vinyl. Was fun. Dire Straights to Eagles to John Prine and Nathaniel Ratliff. Went lots of different directions.
A forestry forum Playlist would be fun. dancing-jack
My playlist has at least a dozen AC/DC songs in it. A lot of Patti Smith too.

I'm 1/2 way through Dave Grohl's autobiography that I got for Christmas, as a self taught musician, he's amazing.
I've got 2 or 3 of Johny's albums from his last efforts. He struggles for sure because he's pretty weak voiced by then. It's more talk'n than singing.

True, but the "Hurt" song and video don't suffer from it. The guy that originally wrote the song said "It's now Johny's song"
" "
The music itself carries him, take that away and poor Johny .......well I won't disrespect the man. By then, he is less of himself.
Dunno, go and watch the Hurt video again.
The original was a little known Punk Rock song by Nine Inch Nails, about addiction.
Cash himself said that if he had been born 20 years alter, he would have been in one of those Punk or Grunge bands. He was a rebel back in the day.

I grew up (still up for debate) listing to my older brothers and sisters albums so my favourites were 8 to 10 years old compared to other kids my age, I seem to have bypassed the metal craze and went from Beatles, Stones, Who, Floyd, Hollies, Queen, Ten Years After kind of stuff to Dire Straits, U2, Tom Petty, SRV with a bit of Willy Nelson and Dwight Yoakam and Clash mixed in.
So pretty much everything except disco and death metal. :D

Not on me, but I do remember them in school. Some classes we had audio/visual lessons. The visual was slides. Even remember reel to reel film, we used to have a film day. Mother used a dicta-phone in the hospital in the 60's before tape recorders. It was on disks or record type things. ;D Grampa had the first tape recorder around here. He erased as much as he recorded. :D I've got boxes of brand new 5-1/4" floppies and computers and drives that run them, still working. ;D

How do you guys get your music? I'm out in the shop almost all the time and use free Pandora and sometimes Live X Live. Pick the songs I like but wondering if a paid subscription would work better.
I'm using iTunes but am looking for alternatives.
We have a Spotify family plan, which allows up to 5 users, no ads, and you can save play lists for offline playing.
Just seems to work and isn't silly $$, especially when it's spread over 4 users. Once you play a few albums it starts making playlists for you of related artists, so you check out some new stuff.
Youtube to mp3 convertor. If you google it tons of sites will come up and you just paste the youtube link into the bar. but theyre generally fulla adware and spyware so i only do it on an old tablet thats not important to me. Just for music library anymore.
Downside is you dont get anything random like the radio. If i want that ill just play youtube and type in a genre.. "70s rock compilation" or "bluegrass gospel" then pick one.
I just use the Spotify App and make my own playlists by clicking the like icon on songs I look up. There are also playlists that I hit the like button on so they are saved in your library. I don't subscribe to their service, I just use the freebies. You get a couple short adds every 5 or 6 songs, no biggy. You can hit the random icon and repeat icon. If you've got 100's of songs or more, you'll never play them all in 24 hrs. :D But if you don't hit repeat, it selects songs like you've been listening to, so that is more randomness built in. Have no desire to download anything. When I'm out in the woods, or in the yard or walking I don't want anything else but nature in my ears. ;D In the shop I would just listen to the local radio, they play all the stuff I listen to, plus I get the weather and 5 minutes of news form the Associated Press every hr (which I trust more than most for accuracy). ;D I do most of my listening in the man cave through the web app. Even their podcasts are better on the web app, some of them have video and they never ported video over to all devices they wrote the app for. You take PS4, it plays Youtube, but not Spotify video. ::) Lots of apps are way better on web app versions.

A boy named sue- Johnny cash
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=_Gbtm-93oqE (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=_Gbtm-93oqE)
Most people don't know that a boy named Sue was written by Kris Kristofferson.
Kristofferson wrote "Sunday Mornin' Comin Down", "Why Me Lord", "Me and Bobby McGee", and many other songs, and probably sung "A Boy Named Sue" with Johnny back in the "Highwaymen" days. It was actually written by Shel Silverstein and first performed by Johnny on the live at San Quentin album in 1969.
Thanks guys i did not know kris was the original writer of the song

You folks are posting a lot of old memories. I was always a little off beat when I was younger (OK, I still am) and this tune stuck in my head forever.
DEAD SKUNK IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD - LOUDON WAINWRIGHT III - YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uu5hzc2Mei4)
Well 45 years after it came out (1973) and was popular for a while I actually had the pleasure of meeting Louden at a festival I was working at. Really nice guy. 6 Months later I saw him do his one man show at a local club and it was terrific. His kids are artists too and most enjoyable.
I have resisted posting here because I know once I get going I have a hard time stopping. Especially when it comes to artists I have gotten to know.
Anybody remember this guy? Both he and his lovely music photographer wife live about 4 miles from me.
Lovin' Spoonful - Summer In The City (1966) - YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zs8ZNa73OS4)
John is a great guy and still making great music these days. Mostly he lays low publicly, but locally he will pop uo from time to time. Mostly he plays mouth harp which is where he started as a kid, but I love when Maria Muldaur does a local gig and he backs her up. It's a killer duo. Here they are playing a benefit gig for the local library. Maria melts me into a puddle when she does this tune, every-dang-time.
John Sebastian, Maria Muldaur - Woodstock NY Library Fair July 23, 2016 - YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MtwKMuROwVk)
John and Maria were together in the Even Dozen Jug Band in the early 60's before John formed the Lovin' Spoonful and have been close friends for a very long time. But I'll stop here before I get into anything more boring.

IMHO, Kristofferson was a much better songwriter than singer.
Blinded by the Light. Made popular by Manfred Mann's Earth band, but written by Bruce Springstein. Springstein's version is very pale compared to the Earth band. There was a bit of controversy around the lyric "wrapped up like a douche", originally written as "Revved up like a Deuce" (as in Deuce Coupe).
The addition of the drummer's voice-over at the end of the song made a huge difference in it for me.

One of my all time favorite Willie Nelson songs to listen to and play.
I was a DJ in the 80's, playing for school dances, weddings, community parties, and a night club. (yes, all vinyl albums; dual turntables with a mixer - no CDs) There were two songs guaranteed to get any older crowd up (70yrs old and up today): Break it to me Gently by Juice Newton and Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress by the Hollies. The younger crowd (my generation) would always respond to Free Bird by Lynyrd Skynyrd and a few songs by AC/DC (e.g. Back in Black), Queen, or Van Halen (e.g. Jump).
Personally, I use Amazon music. I have a playlist of about 1,000 songs of most genres. Downloaded to my phone, so I can shuffle (the songs that is) anywhere I go.

Hard for me to state a favorite song, group or artist. Nearly all that have been on this post so far, are very easy listening for me. Maybe because of sheer number of good songs, The Beatles, Elton John, and Supertramp rise to the top for me. I enjoy nearly every Supertramp song they published from '74 to '87. OK, I am still practicing restraint, so here is my one for the day. Not quite retro, and many of you folks won't know this music I expect. This is more likely 'musician's music', but I know these guys particularly the Banjo player, who I call a friend, and the bass player who I call 'something special'. Vic is one of the top bass players in the world and this might show you why. The video is in two parts because, well, I dunno. The 'best part' is in the second video to my mind. When Vic breaks that string and how he moves on blew me away. The I met him and asked him this incident. He said he doesn't recall it at all, it happens all the time and he just works his solo out with what he has. OK, Yeah, sure. Anyway, it's always been on the top of my list. I have seen them do this tune several times live and it is different every time.

Brittany is just a monster player in so many genres, Sarah Joroz is a young lady with a great deal of developed talent and a real sweetheart to talk to. I'm doing a radio talk show in a couple of weeks about 'firewood'. SO I was searching for some sort of music related to firewood, wood burning, wood stoves, or whatever. This one popped into my head, it's a long time favorite I had memorized when it came out and I was pleased to see I hadn't forgotten the timing or lyrics. Not sure if we should use this on the show or if I should keep looking, but I sure haven't found much else.

Interesting tune. I see that Chris Hillman, the mando player in this group later became the bass player for the Byrds. Small world.

He was at Woodstock '69 for most of the event and actually had more stage time than any other artist. He spent a lot of time trying to calm the crowd and filling in for acts that were delayed or could not get there. Ironically he was one of the lowest paid perfumers because he was only contracted to do one set.

@wdh, sorry, I only just saw this comment. Yes, he is. He has tried to do it all, Bluegrass, fusion type stuff, he even wrote a concerto for symphony. He is a great player. I became friends with him about 7 or 8 years ago through a mutual friend who was a mentor to both of us in different ways. Anyway, several years ago we put together a special event to commigrate the life and accomplishments of that common friend and Bela appeared with about 7 or 8 other banjo greats. It was a 2 hour gig and the whole thing is on you tube. But Bela played some duets with another friend of mine who I believe to be the best on the planet today. Secretly I believe Bela knows this also. It's not a competition, but it s great music! I can send you the links if you like. I could post it here but 2 hours is a lot to watch and for folks who don't know the players or understand the significance of the event, it will just be boring. If you are a 5 string banjo player it is a must watch. It took us a long time to do the post production editing and I must have watched various pieces 100 times during that process. I now watch it about once a year, alone, when I am really missing Bill, along with some bourbon, and get all teared up.
Edgar and Mark I have never met. But I have spent time with Jerry and he is a rip! He has that subtle understated delivery to his humor that just brings you to your knees at times. Funny as heck. Great guy and mad skills and also a bit of a musical genius over so many different genres. Sam is also a treasure with such a vast and rounded experience. I have an interesting story about running into him in the Raleigh Airport and then trying to keep up with him as his wife was yelling at us from behind while we were running to get to another gate. Sweet guy. But I don't travel in those circles anymore. I miss it though, sometimes terribly so.

What ? No armored military convoys on the autobahn.? Was in some 2 miles long, arghh, cough cough.
Interesting tunes nonetheless. Better than the disco which was hip there at the time.
Have i said how much i hated disco ?

He's cheating, its a 6 string banjo tuned the same as a guitar.
Oh well, I would have to cheat too. :D

Ahahaha, that right there is funny !
And I thought all banjos were 4 strings.
Everyone loves Grace Slick right ?
Jefferson Airplane - Somebody To Love, American Bandstand, 1967 - YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=myVzaR8cmDA)
Well 4 string ain't so bad, I use to putter around on one a little bit.
I've tried a 5 string and it has me wondering what that extra short string is for, I've never have been able to get it to "fit in".
The better banjos have 5 strings and are played with finger picks. 4 strings are mostly tenors and played with a plectrum pick. Used mostly for Irish and jazz band type music.
What Neil is playing there is called a 'banjatar' as Hilltop said. There are many variations on this like the Banjolin (banjo/mandolin) with 8 strings and the banjouke with 4 strings. This allows players of those instruments to get that 'banjo sound' while still playing the same chord structures and fretting positions. None of these should be confused with the Cello Banjo which is a totally different concept and sound. :)
Hilltop, those 5 strings are totally different than what you're used to. Two basic styles of play: Clawhammer and 3 finger. I have had instruction at both and failed miserably. ;D
I "hack" out chords with a flat pick, not perfect but gets the job done. Still hope to learn the three finger roll.
Recently a friend asked about amplifying the banjo, I told him you can, but use caution you're playing with fire. Typically there are two types of crowds, those who love the banjo, or those who hate the banjo. ;D
I haven't played guitar for about 10 years, but I use to practice often. Mediocre at best, but I could play out all the basic major/minor chords, and a couple bar-chords. I started learning that you only needed to know a 3-4 chords to make a unique jingle by picking out individual strings and different patterns. My greatest accomplishment was being able to play hotel California, unfortunately just strumming though, way off from picking it.

The poor cello is a widely undervalued instrument IMHO with a wide range of applications. As it happens I have a really good friend in Rushad Eggleston who is a top class player. Background on this video: we were in the artists camping area at a large bluegrass festival I work at. This was early morning (like 9am) and all the players here had stage gigs later in the day, but they were just getting up and playing to wake up and get in the groove for the day just playing fun stuff. The first tune is Foggy Mtn. Breakdown which Ron (the banjoist here) really likes as a standard. But the second tune, Jerry''s Breakdown [Jerry reed] is the one I posted this for as it is not something you would expect cello to break out on. Rushad does pretty doo with it here. (For bluegrass fans, Rushad was one of the founding members of Crooked Still).

I am pretty sure the fingernails have noting to do with it. :D I miss those days badly, we had good times. I don't think they will ever come back. But I have to say, I got pretty lucky with my campsite mates. I was thinking about this after I posted and remembered that I had just done an overnight shift with the medical crew that day and came back into the campsite and walked into this. I needed sleep but then I thought, I can sleep when I'm dead, this ain't gonna happen again, I'll just sit here and drink my coffee. So I stayed just out of camera and enjoyed. I hope some others have too.

My first ever concert was Steely Dan in Hartford, Connecticut when it was still The Meadows - had to be early 2000s? I know I hadn't graduated, so it may very well have been Summer 2000. I had to beg the parents to let me go to a concert with friends 😂 I've slept since then and my memory isn't what it used to be.
All I remember is it was pouring rain and everyone was bodysurfing the muddy hill. The smell of wacky tabacky was all around and I hadn't yet been exposed to that so I had no idea what it was.
Kid Charlemagne came on and everyone went wild.
So, not sure if they qualify as "retro" but it was a fun memory of mine.
Probably my favorite song of theirs ❤️

Many years ago in my youth, AC/DC was not a top tier band. A radio station called DC 101 hosted a week of concerts at the old Capitol Centre(home of the Washington Bullets). Each night had a different charity theme, Toys for Tots, Feed the Poor, Salvation Army, etc. You paid $1.01 and brought something to donate and got to see AC/DC. Other shows that week were Chaka Khan, Golden Earring, Mott the Hoople, Badfinger.

That's a good one! I consider both of these fellas 'local boys'. Daryl owns a music club about 20 minutes away and Todd got his start in Woodstock engineering and producing at Bearsville Studios. He would work the board all night for recording bands booking time, then work on his own stuff after they left in the wee hours until mid-morning the next day, get some sleep, and repeat.
God stuff there.
Am really enjoying this thread. If I weren't completely techless would post some Seekers and Mary Hopkin songs. The Seekers just showed up in the 60's, got a number one record competing against the Beatles, and went away. Mary Hopkin was signed by Paul McCartney on Apple records and had a small success and also went away. Have found both of them on Utube doing both old and new songs.

That Flagstaff Lake tune hits home having lived there near Flagstaff, paddled, fished and hiked all over that countryside. You can still see remnants of the town below the water
and parts of the paved road going in and out of the water on the south shore.

Here in North west Pa we have two large reservoirs that covered towns back in the 20ies and 30ies. Lake Pymatuning is one and Kinzua is another. There are large islands out on Pymatuning where you can still find the old roads and foundations. But of these places were damned in the name of flood control.

Brad, I really enjoyed the young lady on the skins, She had it all going on. BUT the B.B. King set just took me down the hole. Holy cow that was good, and yeah I watched it all. It's always amazes me when the Masters have a major spotlight gig like that who they bring on stage with them. I always wanted to meet Mr. King but the stars never aligned for that. He is a gem none the less and a true master of his art. I enjoyed that more than most would think. Thank you.
This thread has ruined me. Now I go in and go to Youtube, and play songs from the 60's for entertainment. Had not thought of finding all the old stuff I enjoyed available like this. Sad part is I found the Seekers had made a lot more from later on there as well, as well as all the Judith Durham songs she did solo, but a couple days ago I clicked on Keith Potger doing a couple songs, and he was playing at an old folks home, and the base player was in the audience. Looked like he has had a stroke, and was using a walker to get around.

It don't seem to matter where they grew up but it seems like most of those country singers sound a bit like Mr Haney from Green Acres.....just saying. :D
Was watching something on TCM tonight and these guys came to mind and down the rabbit hole I went. I have to say, this is one of the sweetest and most memorable songs in my memory and will always be dear to me. I first 'discovered' it in a neighborhood tavern juke box when I was about 21, but it struck a chord and stuck with me ever since. Maybe it was an 'old man's bar' but I loved the neighborhood and the people in that corner tavern we had when we were first married nearly 50 years ago. I think the old guys in the place got a kick out of me picking it out on the jukebox and singing along when it came on

Can't mention Jeff Healey without playing his big 1988 hit...
The Jeff Healey Band - Angel Eyes - YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kag0TsZzxpw)
Written by John Hiatt and Fred Koller, "Angel Eyes" was Hiatt's most commercially successful song. There also was a bluegrass version done by "Newgrass Revival", soon after Jeff Healey's "See The Light" album version was released. As noted Healey was a gifted player. Made even more remarkable because he was completely blind, and that he developed his own style of playing the guitar laying flat like a steel guitar.
I saw an interview with him at home, he had a wall of the old 78 rpm blues records and could tell you where each one was. Sadly a great talent gone too soon.

Steve Earle - Snake Oil - YouTube (https://youtu.be/cqk5of8LgLE)
That's a good 'un I had not heard before. Steve used to have a house here in town, next door to a buddy of mine. I would run into him at the food store sometimes when he was in town. He did many local gigs and workshop/music camps. He sold that house, I think about 5 years ago or so. Downsizing, I heard.

Sad week in music this past week, two of the all time greats of bluegrass passed away. Booby Osborne and Jesse McReynolds were both great mandolin players, and brother harmony singers. Also coincidentally both lived into their 90's, and were preforming well into their later years.
Osborne Brothers - Rocky Top 1967 - YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=77hneLgt33k)
The song that made the Osborne Brothers (Bobby and Sonny) famous for life. And one of the greatest, most played bluegrass songs of all time. Also should note Sonny and Bobby are regarded as the first bluegrass act to put electric amplification directly in the mandolin and banjo (playing with fire :D), which wowed the rock and roll crowds of the late 60's.
Better Times A Coming - YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r-MBMfdihLU)
One of Jim and Jesse's more lighthearted songs, they recorded many albums together throughout their career. Jesse developed his own "cross picking" style of mandolin, which was different from the others. He was well regarded for his "brother harmony" singing with his brother Jim.
May their music live on. smiley_guitarist

Well I just learned this morning that Peter Schickele passed away on Tuesday at home. I have been watching his concert performances and interviews on you tube all day and re-reading some album jacket notes. Peter was not for everybody but I was a big fan of the radio show he did for NPR for a couple of years. I never met Peter or made one of his performances, he toured all over the world mostly in the big concert halls with full orchestras. Pete was a classical composer first, he had 5 grammys to his credit and also did some movie scores and such. My friends Bill Ketih, Eric Wesiberg, and Happy Traum were the 'ensemble for one of his albums called "Black Forest Bluegrass" and Bill said it was a singularly unique experience.
Pete was also a humorist and used that humor to make classical music interesting and he also educated at the same time. (Think 'Spike Jones meets Victor Borga'.) Peter was self credited with discovering the existence of J.S Bach's 21st of his 20 children as well as his musical works and he curated and shared all his 'discoveries' of the works of P.D.Q. Bach.
I doubt there will ever be anyone else like Pete. He was a local guy up in Woodstock, and also kept an apartment in Manhattan because of all his work down there. He was a professor at Julliard for a number of years also.
His obituary in the Washington Post was pretty well written:

There are a lot of videos of him and as I said, he wasn't for everybody, but if you like any music and have a quick ear, some of his stuff is really good and quite fun.
Here's and appearance on Johnny Carson as an introduction:

In recent years Peter suffered ill health and was not in the public eye, but his works stands on it's own and I truly will miss him.
To put it in his terms: Peter Schickele 2024-1935??
Sad news from Nashville, Legendary country singer Toby Keith passed away after a battle with cancer. In his career that spanned decades, he had 20 #1 hits and sold 40 million albums.
My favorite song of his on country radio in the 90's. Should've been a cowboy...

Bob and Bruce and something about some old time rock and roll.

Never thought I'd see the day when a chainsaw was used as a musical instrument.
Interesting tune built on a blues riff. I can't quite make out the saw (older vintage), but the bar looks like a Jonsered. The lyrics I found to be 'somewhat different' than what was common in that time period.
First time I have heard a chainsaw used as a lead instrument rahter than a sound effect. In this case it replaces a Sax. I have heard tunes using a tractor engine as the bass drum, but it's been a while. I'll look around.
Fun stuff.
Found it! IMHO one of the best jam tunes of all time. Good stuff!
Some of the comments on that video are pretty good too.
And while I was down in that rabbit hole (Gee, thanks Brad!) I found this, which reminded me of a few of our members:
(Still trying to figure out out that guy plays so well without plugging in his guitar?)
Then this one built on a Delta Blues jam theme:
Apparently there are a lot of folks who play along with their tractors during down time! There went another hour of my life down that rabbit hole. ffcheesy
Yeah, that Lumberjack chainsaw song dates back to the 90's, remember hearing it back then.
That guy doin' Sweet Georgia sounded good, he should take that old tractor out on tour! ffcheesy smiley_guitarist
That would put a new meaning on the expression "loading in for a gig" ffcheesy🤣 fiddle-smiley
You're welcome for the rabbit hole. Those 3 singing about the stuck tractors looked like something the guys I ran with 25 years ago would've done (getting the tractors stuck that is as none of us could carry a tune in a bucket).
Not sure if y'all heard, but ...

Sad news this weekend, the legendary singer-songwriter-actor Kris Kristofferson died at age 88. He wrote the hit songs: "Me and Bobby McGee", "Help Me Make it Through the Night", "Why Me Lord", and as seen in the video performing with Johnny Cash, "Sunday Morning Coming Down". He also was one of the members of the ultimate country supergroup, "The Highwaymen". As well as serving in the military, being a chopper pilot, a janitor at Columbia recording studio Nashville, and actor throughout his career.
Rest in Peace Kris, may his music live on.
This is from the new Van Morrison album, which is an instrumental. I swear I heard this years ago like at least close to 50 years ago. It is no way original to Morrison. I can't place the artist that sung the way I remember. I want to say Wilf Carter, he sometimes was yodelling and making noises. It was someone that my grandfather would listen to. Originally, I think it was the 'Fox Chase' song, by Deford Bailey. But the version I remember was closer to the Van Morrison version. I don't have the old Wilf Carter album anymore that I'm sure it was on. So long ago and forgotten. :D

When it's music you listened to that's now classic or Retro...
Shihad is a NZ band that formed in the 90s and have been active ever since. But they just announced their retirement, after 30 years of touring, First gig of their farewell tour is local, and the NP bowl, and outdoor park, along with 5 other bands as part of the Summer concert scene.
Anyway, we are there. Other bands are a bit of a mixed bunch, but we can find a patch of lawn up on the hill and relax for the afternoon / evening.
Song from their first album. Low budget on the video, but the music is good.

Nope, definitely not that song. It involves harmonica and voice like the Morrison version. But it was done a long time ago, before that band. Here's the original by Deford Bailey. I heard it by some other old timer, that I can't nail down. I know I had the record one time.

Sorry Donk, I can't research stuff that is happening in your mind, especially when there is no connecting title and the two tunes your reference are totally different. ffcheesy
You will figure it out if you keep the tune in your ear, it will come to you, but I'm at a loss.

Wasn't train related because he'd make out like a hound dog in between the harmonica sound. ffcool Driving me nuts that I can't remember who.
me too! ffcheesy ffcheesy ffcheesy ffcheesy
That Van Morrison instrumental is definitely different. :wacky:
I've never heard hootin' like that between harmonica blasts (and I've heard thousands of songs).
Thought for a minute there was some big machine rumbling behind him, until I recognized it as a timpani drum. ffcheesy
I found it. It was Wayne Raney's version of 'Fox Chase'. Recorded in the late 40's. The song's title refers to Fox Chase, a neighborhood in Northeast Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Shihad, Home Again - Live (https://photos.app.goo.gl/q48hQQRcx3zt6WtH9)
Shihad have been a big part of the NZ music scene for the last 36 years, 10 Albums, and have finally decided to retire. First show of their final tour was in New Plymouth, at the outdoor Bowl of Brooklands, in the main city park. First time over all those years they had played there.
We got there early as I wanted to see the 2nd band on the bill, Elemnop, who didn't disappoint. Couple of the mid bands were a bit blah, but you could tell folks there there to see Shihad.

Pic the band posted from the stage for the "turn on your phone lights and dance along" bit.
Rock the Bowl.jpg
Anyway, it was a well run all ages event with a decent crowd. New Plymouth is a bit of the beaten track, and the venue isn't huge. so hard to attract big acts.
The Tommy video was real good, it reminded me of one I watched a while ago that was done during something called Porch fest in Quebec. I thought they did a good job on The real Me.
Last time I saw a large crowd trying to do the Macarena was back in 1998 when the high school I went to rented an arena for an afternoon. 200+ teens on skates, and a few without, crowding the red line (center ice for those who don't know hockey terms) dancing to this one.
The faces on some of the people in the crowd in this one are great.
I found a cassette tape in a box and played it yesterday.
The label has Dec 1989 on it and the people on the radio mentioned the Berlin Wall coming down.
It has Christmas and country music recorded off the radio.
This song grabbed me. Maybe it is more relevant today than in 1989?

Read today that Brian Wilson has passed away at 82, original member of the Beach Boys. One of the most creative musicians of his time, bringing uniquely original sounds and harmony to pop rock. May his music live on.
Sly Stone just died as well. Not my style, but still a musical ground breaker. I think he was 82 as well.

Yup, I had heard he passed also. Not my cup of tea either, but if I had to pick one of his hits "Everyday People" has a fun groove to it.
