I was able to get a hold of a fine sycamore log so we are gearing up for another sycamore project. This one is set for May 24, 2014. This is the Saturday before Memorial day. We are doing it in the spring this year for a couple of different reasons. The main reason is that we have the log now and don't want it to degrade through the summer. The other reason is that last year it was a bit warm.
The sawing will be getting started around 9:00 a.m. This will allow us to get most of the sawing done before lunch so we don't have to work to hard with a full stomach.
The address is 1607 Capps Browning Rd. Rentz, Ga. There is several hotels close by at the intersection of Interstate 16 and Hwy 441.
We would like to keep a head count going so we know how many we are feeding. I will get it started with Lorraine and I being 2.
Well, ya should already know that I'll plan to be there. So, 3. Let me know what to bring!
I might come if I get to take the lumber home :).
That makes 4.
We put it on our calendar, but don't count us yet. :)
Vick and I make it 6
Just looked at the map, its 5 hrs from here... Sure would be cool!
No can do. Working as usual. :(
On calendar, but don't count me yet. About 6 hrs for me, and I could go by WM GA on the way.
Put me down as #7. 8) :)
I would love to come see. You are right on the way for us to go to Sea Island where 2 of our daughters live. If my wife had her way we would be there. Hum... I'm thinking business expense.
Write it off and come on. The more the merrier. It is sad how excited I got today thinking about this while at the mill. We always have so much fun and enjoy meeting all of our new old friends. Anybody sitting on the fence about coming, just put it on your calender and come on.
We nornally have a little get together on Friday the night before so if any of you are in town the night before please stop in. If Fishpharmer brings the fish like he normally does there might even be a fish fry. ;) If it is cool enough we can light the bon fire.
This Possum will not walk into the same trap twice. :D :D :D :D :D
Seriously......I had a ball last year but can't make it this year. smiley_curtain_peek
Jake puts on a great time!!!!!

Went to the church for a wild life supper awhile back and someone brought cooked opossum. You won't believe this but they feed over 100 people and there was still opossum left over. :D

lets call it 8 and 9 for me for the sawmilling and Paul to see his girl friend
In the "Favorite Leftovers" thread, possum would be mine because it would be left over, and over, and still left over.
yum possum! you know what they say... everything is good if it sits in grits :D i was thinking about flying in for the weekend but, the foods youall eat is quite disgusting so i;m rethinking my trip :D
I always heard you cook possum on pine board for 1.5 hours on 325, throw the possum out and eat the pine board.
red oaks lumber, I would go!! There has been very few places that I could not found something that I like to eat. And I am a VERY fussy eater. And it's not like you are going to be there 5-6 days steady. One missed meal will not kill ya. Or has not killed me yet.
Is DanG planning to bring any more of those fried chicken feet?
We had a nice kettle of rocky mountain oysters in gravy last year.

I will be in White Springs, at the FL folk festival that weekend. That puts me just 3 hrs away. Definite maybe. I'll confirm or deny closer to time.
Nomad, I can bring some feet if'n you gots the hongries for some. ;D :D

You know MagicMan,I might be wrong? Maybe one of you Southern members could come to Chesterville and put me to the test. ;D Pick up that POSTON guy,he'll be the one in the rocking chair, and bring him up here too. Leave them grits at home. My friends at the Kittery Border takes my Cursade VERY serious as I do. Even if you said you knew me,they would not belive you with grits on your breath. We do have a DWG law here in Maine.

I sure would like to come, but fraid that's just a bit too far. BUT, there's a small sycamore log in the back yard, an lt40 under the shed, and I could come up with a baloney sandwich. What else do I need ? :D

Piney,
Small only counts in horse shoes and hand grenades. The sycamore log has to be huge for the event to qualify as a Sycamore Project on the Custom Sawyer scale.

Justin you need to just come on over for the big day. You will have time to make it back home for the trip north.
Traveling ain't what it used to be with 2 young kids in the picture. There was a time I wouldn't think twice about driving 24 hours straight if I had a driving buddy (did it in 2004-Yosemite National Park to Russellville, Arksansas, nonstop). But I am old and weak now.

The coastal route is beautiful. Give yourself enough time as It will take all day to get there from Portland.
The airport is 2 hours away,Acadia National Park,Bar Harbor,is 4 hours away. I worked at Acadia for 2 summers. Magicman is better on Route numbers than I am. I know how to get there,I just go. ;D
Bring something warm. Acadia is cold at night and early morning. Would be 90 at high noon,50 at night and this was in July.
We traveled that route along with many others in '95. move_it It was a 9,000 mile trip. :)
I have the Rand McNally out this morning. sail_smiley No water travel but some navigating. We will not be traveling any many Interstate Hwys.
Riding the back highways in the South is very enjoyable.
Jake, I am assuming that GPS will find your address? ;D
Just stop at the place on Caps Browning Road where you see a big whack of logs, a huge sawshed, and a bear on the driveway. That will be the place.
We are now planning on driving most of the way Thursday and spending that night at Chewacla SP at Auburn. Friday, it will be a relatively short trip on 96, 341, & 117 to Jake's place.
Magic....put WDH's address in your GPS. You'll burn a tank of gas finding that place. move_it........ :D
If he had an accurate pin on the map I could find him. I should be driving fairly close to him. ;D
I have false addresses that can be used to find both of my locations. I use them for directions to the Chickin Crispins.
You better get you a couple of Drones., :D
Lynn, it is easy to find Jake's place. Just take US319 south out of Dublin. When you see the racetrack on your right, turn around because you missed it. :D :D
The first time I went to Jake's, my gps told me I'd arrived about 200yds short of his place. It wasn't hard to see it from there. :)
Like Nomad said when gps said to turn go to next driveway down the hill you see the saw shed 8)
I think I make 17 or so. I'll have a hich hiker with me, but he travels light. All he needs is a walmart bag for a few duds and some more chicken feet.
If anyone wants to bring some hardwood scrapes for my Son's budding wood working hobby it would sure be appreciated!

Is Wild Bill coming
When it comes to GPS's they have a tendency to tell you, you (Tom) are there a bit early. Just keep driving tell you see the bear holding the mail box and logs scattered from hell to breakfast and your first thought will be this guy needs a sawmill. Take a right and come sit on the porch awhile. Looking forward to seeing all that are able to make it.

My chances of being able to come went from around 10% to 1%. A new sawmill breakdown. >:(

Well I got most my stuff loaded just got to load the cold stuff Friday morning. I got a little surprise to cook Friday evening just as appetizer, I usually don't do these except for special event . Please everyone have safe travel and I'll see everyone Friday afternoon.
I too have my gear loaded except for the cold stuff. The box trailer is loaded with tarp buildings, tables, tents and cooking gear. The bikes and grill are in the bed of the truck. I leave in the morning for White Springs FL and the 62nd FL folk festival. I will blend into the tent city in the "pickers camp" and enjoy a day and a half of music. I will depart from there about 5am Saturday for a Waffle House breakfast and plan to be there in Rentz at the advertised time of 9am. Will be in the wife's station wagon for the sake of gas mileage. After lunch, it'll be back to the festival.

Nancy wants some sycamore slabs and live edges from the edger. For her projects. She is fixing peas and Potato salid to trade.
If Mrs. Nancy is helping in the kitchen she can have all the slabs that are left over. Keep in mind that Raidar Bill has put in a order for left overs also. ;D

I will air dry the lumber for a while, then kiln dry it. Then, I will offer it for sale. It is very hard to find good q-sawn sycamore.
Thank you Lorraine and Jake for inviting us to your home. Thank you Jake and Danny for allowing me to be apart of this event, and thank you both for the wood donations. Julio, my stomach hurts a little bit every time i see you, dang good food.
I am glad i got to help a little without getting in the way. I learned sweeping is not as much fun as it looks and i have to be told which stack each board goes to. if i get to decide, i will pick the wrong one.
I had a great weekend, thank you all
Thanks for the reply. I just built a dinning table and it has some 1/4 sawn in it. Sycamore sure has some pretty rays in it. I wish that it was a harder wood to take more abuse. I like working with the good stuff thats not twisted. bg
Wildbill,
You are a fine broomsman ;D.
I was admiring his technique from my vantage point (in a chair at the far end of the mill ;D).
To be fair in making compliments, I need to compliment you Paul because you did a fine job of chair sitting :D.

Just picked up and read the thread from before I left. Great time. I thank Jake and Lorraine for hosting such a wonderful time and I thank each and every one of you who attended. You are all very special people. And I even got to meet Magicman!
Oh, and somebody put a bug in my ear... I won't mention any names (Danny) about my forum picture not looking anything like me. Well, I just wan't to point out that Poston's picture doesn't look anything like him either!
In any case, Danny took a picture of me in the sweltering Georgia heat with sawdust all over me. Y'all saw me and what I looked like. I'll be changing my picture as soon as retrieve my phone from church where I left it on Sunday. Poston, I'll be expecting you to change yours as well!

We have all read about Jake sawing those 40' timbers. Well, the delivery vehicle showed up after he finished sawing the Sycamore and I really think that Jake expected all of us to be gone by then.
Well the logs were tightly secured to the vehicle, so unexpectedly, we were going to witness Jake sawing oversized logs.
This sawing technique excited my curiosity to say the least. What is Jake's secret market that he is closely guarding??

Julio out did himself with the shrimp, shish kabobs, chicken, fresh fried pork skins ect. and some more ects. I had a good time picking and grinning and seeing old friends and meeting some more. Danny plays a mean bass. GRWeldon, played his guitar also. Someone left their guitar stand. Did you ever find out who's it was? The sycamore sawing went very smooth. The quarter sawed grain revield itself just as planned.
Well, here is a pic of the end result all sticked and stacked.

Very nice stack of lumber. 8) The stickers could use a dose of uniformity, lengthwise, however. ;D Does the shade screen in the background keep the lumber from turning gray on the outside? I've got a stack of timbers that I'd like to keep from turning gray over the next couple of months.
How long will this air dry before it goes to the dry cleaners? smiley_sun
Dave,
They are uniform now after a visit from the chainsaw :D. The shade cloth is there to keep ME from turning red :-[ smiley_sweat_drop. It would also serve the purpose of keeping the worst of the sun off the lumber.
David,
I will let the wood air dry for a while, maybe 60 - 90 days unless I need the wood sooner. I also do not have to dry it all at the same time.

Old Chinese proverb......ye who runs through a door wide open, may be surprised at the elevation on the other side.
Ain't no hill (elevation) for a stepper. 8) dancing-jack
I ain't gonna step into that :).
On another subject, the spiral grain woods like sycamore can be devilish. Flat sawn, they are notorious for misbehaving. Here is a perfect example. The board on the top left was a jacket board, one flat sawn off the cant after the first slab was taken off. You can see a little bark on the far end. Compare it to the four boards to its right. These boards were quartersawn. Flat sawn boards, especially the first ones off the log in spiral grain wood like sycamore and sweetgum, almost always turn into airplane propeller stock. Except that they don't make propellers out of wood anymore. One week ago when these boards were stacked green, they were all flat, no matter how Customsawyer sawed em (he just sawed em and left em :)).
If you want some junk, flat saw some sycamore, hackberry, or sweetgum. As they say in the South, "That dog won't hunt". (Old saying).
You might say that it would have been fine if weight had been placed on the top. Well, that is usually not the case. The warp is in the board, weight or no weight. With weight, you don't see the warp many times until you have the board in a project in a table top. Then, it raises its ugly head.
You cannot flatten a warped board in most cases. Warped is warped (old saying).
Should have used a "Power Box and Fan". :D
Oh don't worry. There is a FAN.
And if all else fails, Poston can always sell it for $300 !!!

I think you should market that board as a fan blade. I tried making a couple fresh off of the mill.
Actually, I do level my stacks :).

Best I can tell, Danny has always been on the level.

If you don't stack them level, the moisture in the lumber will run down to the low end causing uneven drying. I read that somewhere on the interweb so it must be true. smiley_thumbsup

:D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D Good one, As long as the pile is flat you will have good lumber. And as long as you don't pile the wood up side down. :D
I always pile on a hill, that way the capillary action of the water running out the low end will pull all the water out. :D
I hate it when I realize that I stacked all the wood upside down :D.
That is like laying out a bunch of lumber then realize that you haven't sprayed the sides. ;)
I am blaming that on you and Julio :D.

You may notice my secret positioning. Danny was getting an upper hand on the situation as I was distancing myself. It is an evasive maneuver I practiced for year while flying ag planes. That maneuver was increased at the beginning of my sensitive part of training.
But you guys are trying to break me down. I am not sure of the reasoning for this and I expect the meaning to surface soon.

Interesting results from some of the lumber sawn at this last Sycamore Project. Here is a pic of the original stack fresh off the saw. (Please note, I have already been scolded about the long stickers :)).
Half of this stack was pulled down and put in the kiln. A week ago, the rest of the lumber was put in the kiln. This second pallet that went into the kiln was on the bottom in the kiln with another pallet of pine on top of it providing a lot of weight on the top layer. Here are some pics of that second pallet. The boards on the top layer were actually the bottom layer in the original stack. This top layer in these pics was on the bottom of the original stack with 20 layers of weight on top of it.
Here it is looking from the side.
The top layer was flat sawn, and the first board in the next to the top layer on the left. The middle board in the third layer was also flat sawn.
Here it is looking from the end.

My experience has been that with sycamore, if you do not quartersaw it, don't bother :-\. I remember that Hackberry Jake had some good results by using it for roof laths put on green and nailed down. I could not imagine using it for anything else.
Oh, the joys of spiral grain :'(.
I also saw another propeller that Jake sawed that day.
Da logs arrive.

Nice lumber Danny....do you deliver? ;D
We've all had this happen.....you just had the guts to show yours. :D :D :D :D
Just goes to show that weight will not tame spiral grain :).
Danny, once you are done planing those down you'll have some really nice sheets of veneer! 8) ;) :D
MM, those pictures are twisted! (See how I 'spun' that?! ;D ...I'll see myself out. :-[)
I agree about the quarter sawing. We had a lot of degrade in the flatsawn stuff, and any way, it's boring, so we try to avoid sawing any.
Small logs will spin, Unless you go slow and they still might.
WDH to bad the lumber did not come out right, Is that snow the background I see?
Propellor sawing, quarter sawing and Purple Drank.
The Sycamore Project seems to be a ton of fun!
Has CustomSawyer sent out any details for the 2015 event?
I don't know the date yet but rumor has it that there will be two people there with propeller booths set up displaying there fine craftsmanship.
Who knows, you might get to fly away (if you drank too much purple drank.).
Slider was flying last year and DanG was his co-pilot. :D :D :D
I want Slider to come landing in there with that GOLD TRACTOR truck.
hey danny , i think your stickers are just fine , ours stick out like that too ,

Alright I was talking with Dang last week and he had a brilliant idea. I think for the next project we will do a quarter sawing demo on one log and then do some pine after lunch. The pine will be a two fold demo. One for the best ways to get 2X lumber out of a pine log and then a few more for the best way to get production out of a mill. Does this sound as good to the rest of you folks as it does to me?
A variety of sawing activities will surely be interesting. Thats a good idea Jake. :)
Did y'all saw something last year? That whole day is clouded in a haze of good food.
But, yes, that sounds interesting.

I think so. I'll have to check the video. :D :D :D

I like it, too.
Sounds very practical and useful to me! DanG had a great idea!
Since we are on the subject of sycamore, I planed the last of the batch of the Sycamore #3 Project, and there were some spectacular wide boards. It has to be pretty rare to get clear boards this wide and with this much figure.

Jake,
It sounds like you have an excellent curriculum planned. For those of us who can't get there, do you think someone might be able to record, edit and post a video of the activities?

Boards don't get much nicer than that.
Nice board. I had never noticed any sycamore trees till I started looking for them lately. My brother in Law has a massive one behind his house, but does not want it cut. Can't wait for the next Sycamore project!
Don't get your hopes to high. It might be a White Oak or some other wood. We never know what we are going to cut or when. We tend to let the logs tell us. ;)
Maple
Sycamore
White Oak
Big Clear Pecan
(Hint: To whom It May Concern.....(That is you, Jake :))), We are getting a little low on inventory ::).
Peter,
Not near as valuable as apple wood ;D.

I hope Bill don't get a larger truck. ;D
Last visit to Danny's I brought my truck (not a baby bed like my dads) and a trailer. :)
I wanted to post a pic of some of this Sycamore Project's lumber. It was shipped to Earl Collins in Ardmore, OK. Earl is a fine craftsman, and this clock is superb. A special project for some special lumber.
Earl, if you read this, you made both me and the wood proud. This is a truly beautiful clock, Sir.
Beautiful!
WOW Stunning to say the least !
This'll put a tear in the Old Goats eye. Thanks for sharing Danny.
Oh my, simply stunning.
(I'm pretty sure I recognize the lumber that clock was made from as the one board that I ran through the edger that year, so I'm taking a small amount of credit for the clock ;D)
That is nice. 8)
Beautiful workmanship!!! (Not bad looking wood either...) ;D
Makes me smile every time that I see that picture.

Yep....that's a nice one 8)
That man has skills. Truly amazing.
Beautiful. Didn't realize sycamore was so pretty. Might have to try and cut some .
Wow, That may have been one the three boards I helped stack at "The Project" last year. :D Nice craftsmanship. Thanks for posting.
